Recruitment is ran internally for current employees of Dublin Airport Authority group of companies which include staff of the Shannon & Cork Airport Authorities can apply.

It hasnt been opened up as an outside competition for over 10 years or is likely to be for the near future.

Both the Harbour Police in Dublin Port and the Airport Police have similar pay and conditions to the Gardaí and have a strong union.

In Dublin Port they have been retiring the Harbour Police off and replacing them with a security contractor. Dublin Airport will probably start to do the same. Under ISPS regulations there has to be some sort of Port/Airport police force but that can be cut down to one or two officers with the rest being just security guards. In other words, you haven't a hope of getting in there.

It was allways a closed shop trying to get into the airport police or harbour police was impossible as it was allways who you knew in there or if you worked in the harbour area or the airport allready i tryed to join the Gardai when i left the army back in the 80s but dident have the height so i tryed the airport police as they dident have the same height restrictions but not a hope:mad::mad::mad:

The only way people can join the Airport Police or Fire Service would be to actually get a job in the airport and look out for when they are hiring, the DAA dont advertise outside the airport as a recruitment drive would cost a fortune and plus anybody that works in the airport has already gone through the relevant security and background checks.Dont know how often they would hire but a recruit class of airport firefighters had their passing out parade last june and the majority of them came from the Airport Search Unit.Id say a few people that went for the new jobs in terminal 2 did so in the hope of eventually joining one or the other and want to get their foot in the door.

I read on one of these posts that the Airport Police were getting Captor Spray and Batons. Did they get them? What law covers this or what law will cover it. Just curious, doing research on applying for work at the airport.

I heard that myself. Surely its logical for them to have batons and spray.

However it`d be logical for them to be armed or to employ some sort of armed tactical team in the event of a terror attack etc..

Knowing this country and the spineless leaders we have it`ll never happen.

That's what the Gardaí are for.

It doesn`t make any sence for an airport police service not too be armed.. They could react immediatley to a hostage situation etc etc instead of waiting for X amout of minutes/hours for the ERU to arrive.. Think about it ;) It`ll take a serious incident in the airport for them to consider an armed airport police unit.. surely its better to be proactive than reactive

There's armed Gardaí at the airport already, if there's a need for more armed personnel there then simply post more armed Gardaí - simple. There's no need to legislate for arming a semi-state body, then spending time & money doing so when there's already armed police in existence.

And unless they are acting on information received prior to an event, all such armed units involved in terrorist or hostage situations are reactive.

Have to agree with Cushtac on this one. APS will never have there own firearms or do they really need them they operate with full support of AGS in this regard and have for decades.

But all you have to do for opposite argument is look at Belfast International Airport Constabulary who have there owned armed officers and whom are not PSNI and they have there own leglisation for this reason.

It would not take alot to changes things here as APFS already have a open firearms licence and are also covered under Airport Byelaws 1994 for carrying and discharge of said weapons but only for Bird scaring duties ;)

I just dont think firearms are needed to be deployed batons and spray would be enough. Sure Harbour Police seem happy enough with there's :D

Thanks for replies but i am still wondering if they were issued or are they about to be issued, and if so what law covers Airport Police getting spray and baton. Thanks again.
