Pretty interesting to say the least. I believe this may be partly a publicity thing for google, but then again, Windows isn't exactly getting much good press these days. Could this be the start of an adoption away from MS Windows?
Doubt it, at least in the mainstream, but time will tell. At least google have the balls to pull something like this. I wonder how employees will fare with Linux/Mac over Windows. Google have made a calculated move to say the least.

A huge amount of their employees were all ready using mac/linux

AFAIK it will only affect new employees joining the company

I see. What about the employees who wish to run NetBSD on a DEC Vax?:)

If you don't require help from the local IT, you can probably run anything you like :D

Publicity stunt. If they stopped all development of windows products, that would be interesting. :D

I wish the whole world would .. not that im a MS hater by any means it just seems each OS after XP is rehashed garbage dressed up that makes you click atleast 3 times to execute anything.

True, they're still going to be using Windows to test Chrome, Google Earth, Picasa and the like, and I'd say they'll still give priority to the Windows versions over the Mac/Linux ones (if any).

I'd say this is probably more of a "Don't use Windows unless your job requires it" than a "Let's move away from Windows".

They've had their own Ubuntu based distro for internal use for quite some time now. It's called Goobuntu.

Picasa and Google Earth both use WINE to run on linux. I wonder are they planning to change that to something native or platform-independent.

Google Earth has had a native to linux for about 3 years now.

Its built using open gl and qt.

Not sure about picasa though :pac:

Not Microsoft's fault that some people in google China were using the 9 year old IE6.

I thought this was a forum for unix based operating systems, not an anti-microsoft forum? Bitter nerds will be bitter nerds I guess.

Google are moving from Microsoft to Linux and OSX, both of which are Unix based operating systems. How is that not relevant to the forum?

Well why is the thread title not "Google using linux" instead of "Google dropping microsoft"?

Because they've been using Linux for a long time. Google using Linux isn't news, Google dropping Windows is however.

Isn't that why IE6 support was dropped from google apps?

pretty sure they dropped all IE support, that may be untrue but google has its own famed google flavour of ubuntu which nobody is sure what it looks like. Chrome OS is based off it. 7 is meant to be alright but from an admin point of view Id much rather work on unix, just is easier

They didn't drop all IE support. IE still has the lions share of the browser market and a lot of google docs/apps customers would be using the later versions.

Its alot less like herding cats, when everyone's machine is on the same version of a distro.
