    hi all

    im after giving up all my other sports to concentrarte on rugby. i have played some second games the last 2 years but im a novice and want to learn.
    so basically im 6ft and 16 stone am fairly fit i wanna try play either 12 or 6 just wondering is there anything i can be doing now before we head back training to get a head start on the others fitness wise. And also is there any good books or anything out there that i can learn more about the game.

    any suggestions will be very helpful thanks.

    I'm not an expert but I'd say, don't read books to get better at rugby anyway. All you can do is improve power and speed for now, as far as I'm aware.

    A few questions.

    What age are you?

    What level are you trying to play at?

    What is you conditioning training age?

    Any injuries/imbalances?

    Go to somebody who gets paid to know these things. It's definitley worth it.

    Go to the gym with a professional trainer who works with rugby players.

    Any information you get here will be sketchy at best.

    Really Id say, forget the books,

    Work on; Power / Speed / (and one that gets skipped) - Agility!!!
    Just be carefull not to get huge, and slow!

    Try and become the type of player you hate playing against.
    ie - Powerfull, Fast, Relentless!

    In my opinion:
    Get a good strength program. You are big enough. 3 days a week strength (maybe 5x5 stronglifts or a more rugby specific program if you can get one incorporating power cleans, squats, also single leg exercises like lunges and single leg squats, think of rucking and tackling are all driving off one leg, usual upper body and lots and lots of core work)
    After your gym session go out onto the pitch/track and do some sprints. Maybe cover 40-50 metres each go. You can vary these distances if you want or do some shuttles. Maybe do 10 sprints, with 30 seconds rest between them. You can lower the rest period to 25 after a week and so on. This will only add maybe 5 or 6 minutes to you work out but you'll feel it.

    If you wanted to do some extra work you may consider doing some speed work once or twice a week (plyometrics/ladders/chutes etc.)

    The above should have you in great nick going into the start of the season.

    I wouldn't read too much. Maybe after you grasp the game completely and if you wanted to get into coaching or play at a high level - AIL and upwards, then you could start delving into books.

    to answer a few of your questions

    im 26, im trying to break through onto a j2 team, i mickey moused around our second team for 2 years so i have a small idea of the game but as i said still a novice and not really sure what is expected of me in different postions

    im fairly strong and at the moment i bulked up from 15 to 16 stone when i decided i was going taking this thing seriously i have been going to the gym 3 times a week lifting pretty heavy weights

    i have fairly good stamina too but been honest im as slow as a wet week. would i need that much speed to be playing 6 i think i might playing 12

    i was also told recently that they are two important postions on the pitch, so do ye think im looking for a bit much to be trying for these positions or should i just train hard and go wherever im put
