Can anyone tell me the level of personsal details provided by carcheck.ie? I need the name and/or address of the current owner of a car, will it give me these details?

    Thanks.

Yep, personal details like that are restricted under the Data Protection Act.

Yep. Both answers above are correct. The Data Protection Act prohibits the release of any information that could identify a private individual. The data that we source from the National Vehicle File doesn't contain any names, addresses or contact numbers.

The only place you'd get this information would be from a member of an Garda Siochana but it would need to be in connection with a criminal matter and you'd probably have to make a formal complaint / statement.

used to be you could get it from local tax office by sening in a request with payment of a fiver. Maybe that is changed now since vehicle reg went to Shannon.

A friend of mine ......years ago...rang tax office and told them he hitched a lift in a car and left his camera behind..... got it straight away.

not suggesting that by the way. probably illegal, just relating for interest sake. Today they would call it social engineering

But you could enquire about the fiver
