Selling house - saving enquiry

Hi folks, If I have put this in the wrong category apologies in advance. Looking for some advice & recommendations on banks, savings, who / what / where etc.....

This summer I am planning on selling my house because I am not living in Ireland anymore, I moved to Barcelona last August. I was very lucky in that I bought my house over 7 years ago so I am in a position to make a profit in the region of 160 - 170K. My plan is to buy an apartment here for that price, so the dream is to buy it outright and live mortgage free. It is possible to buy apartments at that price in Barcelona which was impossible a few years ago.

From what I have been reading here property prices in Spain / BCN are still tumbling and the place seems to be in a rapid financial free-fall. Horrible as it sounds, I want to put the profit from the sale of my Irish house somewhere safe and exploit the situation here as much as I can and let houses fall a little further to get the best deal.

My question is, I frankly do not trust Irish banks or the government one bit. It's one of the main reason I left Ireland. (The weather was a major part too though!) I will probably never make money like this again in my lifetime and I want to be wise with it. I could put it in one of the Irish banks but what if we have a situation like Greece? Could I lose my savings? Help or advice on what people think I should do would be great. I understand one can never tell how the future will pan out regarding the Eurozone / crisis but I am hoping someone may have more knowledge on this than me.

    Many thanks in advance!!!:)

There are plenty of non-Irish banks operating in the Irish market

NIB, Rabo, Nationwide (UK), Northern Rock etc...
