That screen isnt great for a mid range unit. A screen like that would drive me nuts to work on with anything serious.

    Thanks Lethal_Bullet.

Do you have a solution of which I could go back and say to them?

you do realise wintel graphics are as much use as colouring crayons stuffed inside the laptop?

No, I don't. I don't have good knowledge of IT, thats why I have submitted this Forum.

It would be ideal if I could accumulate a list of the advantages and disadvantages of this machine. ;)

    Thanks for your feedback.

core i-3 with basic graphics card might be a better bet and achievable for 600€ - have a look around on dell.

Nope, dell put them in everything now it seems:rolleyes:

This is a similar price and similar spec but snazier.

    Upside is GPU, larger disk.
Downside, slightly slower disk, no fingerprint reader, Home premium.

Video/Gaming/Multimedia stuff? Forget the above. Will crash and burn.

CPU intensive stuff it'll fare well.

Ok I have absolutly no interest in Games at all.

I will be using Photoshop, AutoCad, ETS Professional 3 and various other graphic design packages.

Course I might be using it to watch the odd film when connected to my TV and watch a bit of youtube but thats about it.

    ???

If the screen doesnt bother you then either the Vostro or the Studio would be fine. Personally the 500GB is favourable.

I have the Vostro 3500 with a similar spec inc Win 7 professional and I love it. I'm not a big fan of Dells and previously had the D620 as well as the Studio XPS 1340 and this beats both of them hands down for practical day to day business use. It's not the lightest thing in the world but it's also not too heavy. I carried it around an exhibition in the NEC two weeks ago with the extended battery onboard and it was fine.

The combination of Win 7, i5 processor, excellent backlit keyboard and a screen which doesn't have any glare makes this a fast and very reliable machine. It doesn't look as sexy as the XPS 1340 but it really does the business.

I don't say this very often about Dell but I think they got this one right.

One thing I'm searching for which people here might be able to help with is sourcing a decent case for this machine? I used to have a nice distressed Leather style Doctors Bag type laptop bag which fitted and protected the XPS 1340 perfectly but as this is a 15.6" machine I need to get a new bag and am currently caarrying around an old canvas laptop style briefcase which looks crap and has very little additional storage space for files and accessories etc.

    Any suggestions much appreciated.

    Ben

I hope you don't mind me asking you but how much did you pay for the Vostra 3500? Just wanna see if I can get a better price.

    Hi James,

My total price was €804 + VAT. I did trick it out to the max though including a 3 year onsite warranty and the extra long life battery which I think cost €120 or so by itself.

    Hope that helps.

    Ben

Yeah, have to say my 1000 has a nice keyboard. They're real function over form laptops. Little bulky IMO.
