How do you expect your photographer to dress?

There's a thread over on the photography forum just now and us lot are putting forward our expectations/ideas but i wondered what the brides and grooms actually thought about the subject?

Would you expect a male photographer to wear a full suit, just a shirt, shirt & tie, or do you even mind? What about if your photographer is female? Do you think a 'waitress' style outfit is suitable?

Getting married next year and have a female photographer.
Honestly dont think it would bother me what she wears (within reason).

I think that, like the guests, so long as they look clean and respectable and avoid anything too casual (like jeans) there should be no problems.

I was at a wedding last year with 2 photographers. One man one woman, they wore all black, like a uniform. It worked pretty well.

I've never thought about this before but I think I'd prefer them not in jeans but other than that I don't mind. I don't think a full suit is necessary as long as they look relatively smart.

I'd not really thought about it till I saw the thread in photography section.

I dont think i'd be hugely bothered, even by jeans and a t****y (though maybe not stonewashed and one of those 'your boobs are staring at me' tshirt

My preference would probably be smartish trousers and a shirt (doesnt need to be a formal tucked in kind) for a male and something like trousers and a smart top for a woman...

As long as the pics are amazing thats surely the main thing!

Thanks for the replies. It's interesting to see the opinions of the people who really matter compared to the passionate responses in the other thread ;)

It wouldn't bother me what they wore as long as they didn't turn up in a wedding dress!

A photographer is there to take PHOTOS not having to look a certain way. I'd rather the photographer be comfortable in a pair of jeans and a shirt or whatever than having to go around all day in a suit taking photos - can't be comfortable surely.

I think jeans are perfectly acceptable, assuming of course the jeans aren't torn or have holes in them or whatever!

I was at a wedding at the weekend where the female photographer wore a black trouser suit, can't remember what colour top but it obviously didn't stand out! She kept the jacket on the whole time and I thought this looked very professional, making it obvious she was not a guest or waiting staff but there to do a job.
Trying to remember what the male photographer at mine wore, must have been ok!! :D

I have to step in here and say I would like any photographer I have hired to dress subtly and appropriate. Something that doesn't scream 'Everyone look at me I'm the photographer' in the wrong way.

For instance, I was very disappointed at a friend's wedding last year, which was quite a spiritual affair in the church, as the couple wanted. One of the photographers dressed fine, imo, blended in well but the other wore jeans and a black hoody with a skull and crossbone on it. I thought that wasn't very professional.

Any wedding photographer I recall seeing were dressed casually and in black. Dressing a suit could get them confused for a guest. Dressing in black allows them to blend into the background a little. As people say as long as they dont wear a wedding dress I wouldnt worry about it.

A hoody with skull and crossbones is not ok ... I think jeans and a nice t-shirt or shirt is perfectly appropriate.

I honestly wouldn't care what a photographer wore. We had three photographers at our wedding recently and I think they all wore jeans but I can't remember for sure. Mind you, at one stage they were knee deep in the sea to get the best shots so a suit would definitely not have been a good idea.

+2 . . . I want my photographer to dress nicely enough that she doesn't call attention to herself, but comfortable enough so that she's able to move around and do whatever she needs to do to get the shots that she wants to get. I would never stipulate what I wanted her to wear though . . . I feel that with anything else, you have to trust the people you hire.

It really wouldn't bother me in the slightest- as long as the photos are great! Our guy seems to be a jeans & T-shirt kinda guy & I'm fine with that. We're having reportage style photography done & I think he needs to be comfortable in what he's wearing & not afraid of 'minding his uniform/suit' to get the shots we've seen in his portfolio!!!

Personally, I wouldn't mind what the photograper wore as long as it's reasonably smart and comfy to wear.

However, when I got married, both the photographer and the videographer wore smart suits.

Our photographer wore a suit, shirt and tie as did the videographer. It mattered to me, hence the reason I asked them what they wore before hiring them and it is a good thing that they did as the photographer caught the videographer in some photos and the videographer caught the photographer! They look quite normal in the wedding photos/video, like they're part of the crowd. Only my husband and I know exactly who they are but we employed their services so we should know! The videographer in particular caught the photographer when we were doing our vows but he just looks like a close family friend with camera down at his side. One thing we did request of both our photographer and videographer though was no flash and no lights in church and both were happy to accomodate us. Both were professional on the day and a pleasure to deal with. Even guests commented on how lovely they were and they've been subsequently hired by friends based on their performance at our wedding.

I'd definitely expect them to be wearing a suit, and at any wedding I've been at they have been! It looks very bad if they are caught on camera in anything else!
