feck me, I went to a garage today with a 1 gallon can, put €5.00 of unleaded in... all I got was just over half full .. at that rate it would cost me close to €10.00 to fill it to the brim

Is it an American or Imperial gallon can?

Should have cost about €6 to fill @ 1.34 a litre, filled one the other day ;)

Something ain't right, it only costs €6.10 to fill an imperial gallon at €1.34, €5.04 for a US gallon.

Maybe you put about 3.7 litres in a 5 litre can?

There's no great mystery to it, if it costs €10 to fill at €1.30 odd a litre then it's not a gallon can!

i'm thinking that the garage I fill up at is being sneaky with his pumps, I have an Audi a3 1.6 petrol, and I always seem to be filling it up, I drive with a light right foot... but this can was defo only just over half full and cost €5.00

Don't think that will be a Gallon then, more like a 5 Litre can.

It will be.... look at the label on the one in the picture... I think they all are.

Plus it will have some air gap at the top!

A typical gallon drum easily takes €7 at my local station. I might be filling it a bit over the recommended line though.

You just proved si_guru right. That's not a gallon can. We don't do Royal English gallons anymore and haven't done so for a long time ;):D

A fiver gets you less than 3.5L, you already said it was more than half full, no issue really ;)

the majority of them are 5 ltr cans which = about € 6.75 to fill

There is not way the garage pumps are being fiddled with (at least not to a level that you would ever notice)

Just saw the pic after posting.

€5 to fill it half way though seems a lot.
Should only cost about €6.50 to fill up a 5 Ltr can shouldn't it?

Depends on what price the petrol is being sold at.
    If its 1.40 a litre 5 x 1.40 = 7.00
Those plastic containers can be deceptive as the base is wider than the top you may find the next bit takes a lot less petrol than the first.
Fill it to the brim next time and see how much it is out of interest.
    :)

Slightly off topic - I've one of those 5l petrol cans myself but the screw top is broken. Anyone know how / where to get a new top for it?

    well you over filled it...

    1.35
    x5
    6.75

Slightly of topic, but I work in a yacht club and I get about 300 litres of petrol from the marina fuel dock, in 20 litre containers for the RIB's, and it sets the club back over €450 a week on petrol. The marina fuel dock, which is a branch of maxol charges €1.49 at the minute for fuel, because it can. Boats can't go anywhere else to fill up, especially with internal fuel tanks. and any can over 5 litres is illegal in petrol stations.

That's an expensive summer! I remember when we'd get it for just under the amount of litres. Crazy times, petrol is ridiculously over price IMO.

*when I say boats, I mean Ribs and smaller sports boats with petrol engines. The bigger ones use diesel, which still get ripped off. The forecourt isn't the worst place for fuel guys!

A local petrol that I fill up in have 20 litre containers for sale at €22, this station is a little out of the way an is selling juice at €1.26, I was tempted to buy one and do a proper fill up to save me traveling.

When I worked in a factors the screw top and nozzle pieces were only available with the gallon (5L) container.

Why not fill up the car and siphon the fluid into containers at home?
