I've been looking for a car recently as mine became to small (auris)
I need to put in buggy now :)
I like X-trail 02-04 but I'm afraid of its thirstiness (10l/100km avg) Its big and safe but heard that its not so reliable... on the other hand less visible primera p12 estate 2.2 dci(2002-2004) taking half of that amount of fuel and its diesel, even though it would be over 200 euro more for tax. I like primeras as I was driving P11 2.0 GT before and loved it, of course its not the same but still feel sentiment to primera and nissan all together. My question is what would you prefere? nice looking and safe jeep with 2.0 petrol or cheap to run primera 2.2 dci estate? they're both cost around 5k

To my mnd the X-Trail is going to be challenged with a NA 2.0 petrol... I too had a couple of Primeras, including a GT!... never had a fault. The 2.2DCi should move that car along well.

see I don't do too much mileage anyway (around 7-8k miles per year) so I'm not too scared about MPG. But the other side is multiplying that amount per money spent on petrol (xtrail) or diesel (primera) and its quite amount....

The 2.2 dCi engine in both the Primera and the Xtrail eats turbos and inter-coolers. Stay well away, unless you have €2,000 to €3,000 for their repair/replacement.

If I had to choose it would be the Primera, just because its a car and not a 4x4. Big 4x4's are hard to live with in the long term.
But, if the budget will stretch then go for this

This drives like a car, but with the high ride height. Good fuel economy and reliable. All fixes have been done in Ireland by Toyota.

BTW, there's a good choice of estate cars out there. Anything BMW would be good too.

You seem to believe the X-Trail is a safe car but it got the same 4 star NCAP rating as the Primera so don't choose the X-Trail on that basis alone.

As for which Nissan I would prefer, does it really have to be a Nissan?

No offence but your two options are very mediocre, at best. Primera is not a reliable car and the 2.2, as mentioned, can prove troublesome. And unless you need 4WD I would skip that segment altogether.

    I would look elsewhere.

    4wd jeeps are not "safe".
They turn over easier and are harder to stop. As mentioned above, I would steer clear of that whole segment. Not just fuel expense but also maintenance and tires would be a hell of a lot more expensive. So, your day to day running expenses would be higher.
Have you looked at a ford Mondeo estate? Cheap as chips and cheap to run too. Good cars as well.

Avoid petrol versions of the Rav4 like the plague. 2WD, woeful traction, drinks petrol (and oil) - and has a small tank. The diesels are quite good though.

Nissan got bad when Renault got involved. Coincidentally, Renault got better!
