Is it compltely necessary to have the proof of 950 dollars when you go?? I mean, i have that but no proof other than bank statements, and they say that they're not accepted!!

I went three yrs ago, and we were worried about this too, but we were never even asked. Nor were any of the other 75,000 Irish we met there! So dont worry. Ye'll be fine. You will be interviewed for a few mins alright by customs when you arrive in US. Its a bit intimidating (well it was in Boston anyway) and they'll ask if you have address or job lined up. Once you can give the name of the area you plan to go to, its fine.

    Have a ball. So jealous!!!:)

Just a heads up for any J1 travellers clearing immigration in Washington.

Security are checking everyone with a JI visa. My daughter (20) and 5 friends landed there a few hours ago en route to Orlando and California. She was interrogated by a nasty piece of work (US Security) who insisted she should have a job offer and counted every penny of cash. Luckily she had over 1000 dollars. She stated that none of them have jobs lined up but they have proof of accommodation in Orlando and California and plenty of back up funds.

He suggested that she was there to live with a US citizen and not work.

Because of this she missed her connecting flight to Orlando. Luckily one of her friends stayed with her. The others had to go because all 6 couldn't be guaranteed a seat on the next flight. They have to wait a few hours to catch the next plane.....arrggghhhh!!

What a start to 3 months of worry for an Irish mammy!!!

Oh, that's really not good. I've never heard of that much hassle going on. Well it looks like she's strong, and if she can get through that guy, she'll be able to take on the summer. Don't worry too much :)

I just arrived in JFK yesterday. I was asked how much I had with me but didn't need to prove it. The officer wasn't the most friendly and started giving out to me because I didn't have a job and he wanted to know why all the Irish were arriving without jobs, while students from any other country already had them.
