I was thinking of returning to DCU to do a masters in engineering. Does anyone know if you can apply for the maintenance grant before applying for the Masters itself. Its just I want to know what finances I have available before committing to the masters.

    Thanks in advance.

I believe you can although they take forever to process, so you probably wont know until at least September anyway...

Depends on the local council. I was able to put a claim in early before I'd accepted my masters, but they left it sitting in a file until I gave them the acceptance form. I hounded them every week until I got the money about 2 months later, which is very quick in comparison to other people.

Just another area of public sector that needs urgent reform, generally people don't get their money until long after they need it.

I recieved a grant this year and while I appreciate I couldn't have done my course without out one, boy was it a pain in the ass sorting it out at the beginning

Anyway you can apply for the grant before you do the course but they won't put it through without a letter of acceptance from DCU. The thing to do is as soon as you find out you're accepted is to ring DCU and make sure they send you out an official letter of acceptance because they don't do this automatically. They send you some other stuff to do with registration and your course but not an offical letter. It can be a bit tight timewise between getting everything you need to apply and the deadline so be ready to go with all your other paperwork etc.
