Have daddy pick it up, it was he booked the wrong ticket. :) These links are directly below where you select ticket type.

For online ticket descriptions please click here https://www.irishrail.ie/your_ticket/ticket_descriptions.asp?

    https://www.irishrail.ie/your_ticket/ticket_descriptions.asp?
Ticket Type Available to Description Other notes
Student Students Single/Return is valid for the date(s) shown on ticket only. Passenger must have a valid Student Travel Card to avail of the student fares. www.studenttravelcard.ie for more information. When purchased online you will be assigned a reserved seat at no extra cost on the reservable leg(s) of the journey.

However, I would write them a nice letter, after checking to see whether the internet special fare was actually less than the internet student fare. Ask nicely if some arrangement can be arrived at.

In fairness, the Student Travel Card is demanded by most travel companies, save Bus Éireann.

They are out in force, and as a guy who pays alot for his ticket, I like to see it. The inspector was with a visiting family yesterday for quite a time, didn't quite catch the outcome, but common sense should be used also.

Does the online ticket not ask for the card ID number?

    I'm fairly certain it doesn't.

I could ask for them to implement it. :)

You would think that qualification for a student ticket is that you are a student, not that you have purchased this card.

In my day it was the same, with the travelsave sticker on the back of the ISIC but what happens if someone from overseas comes over to Ireland? Are they not allowed to get a student fare?

As long as someone is a student and can provide valid accreditation to that effect then they should be allowed the student fare.

Otherwise it should be called something different than a student fare or student ticket. Being a student is not what qualifies you to get the fare.

I tried to book the student ticket and received a pop up warning that I needed the correct Irish Rail Student Card:
You have chosen a Student ticket. To travel on this ticket you must have a valid Iarnród Éireann Student TravelCard in your name. No other student ID card is valid for discounted travel on Iarnród Éireann services. For details about this card go to http://www.studenttravelcard.ie

My sympathies with the OP is beginning to wain...

Her father booked the ticket for her! I can understand the father falling foul of this ridiculous rule if he is sure his daughter is a student. Why would he not think she has a student card?

Of the countries I know of, it's the same in UK and France . You want the cheapest fares : you buy the card.

(Admittedly in France you can get 25% off by proving you are under 25, but they start charging full fare from 12 years old.)

I can see the next thread "I booked a rail ticket for my daughter and she got fined, can I appeal" :-)

That's like fining someone using a child ticket when they use their passport as ID because they haven't got an Iarnrod Eireann child card which costs €15 from all good retailers.

A little off topic: I've got a similar card, which costs €49 a year, and gives 50% off the TER, and 25% off the TGV. Pays for itself after a couple of months. It's part of France's unwritten "one price for the French, one price for the foreigners" rule.

Back OT: On the one hand, every student knows they need a STC to use the trains; on the other hand, though, the STC is a racket.
