    Hi guys,
I have fixed this guys laptop which was having this error message on start up.
    Windows Boot Manager
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
    To fix the problem:
    1. Insert your windows inststallation disc and restart your computer.
    2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next".
    3. Click " Repair your computer."
If you do not have this disc, contact your system admisistrator or computer manufacturrer
    for assistance.
    File: \Boot\BCD
    Status: 0xc000000f
Info: An error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data.
Using google i found that the solution was to use the vista recovery disk.
I got a recovery disk as he didnt have one and used that.
It fixed the problem, however the error reappeared two week later.
I used the recovery disk again.
    And now its back again.
Can anyone offer me a solution?
I'm thinking that the only option left is to reformat the laptop.

    Thanks
    jak/mar

At a guess I'd imagine there is an underlying malware issue. Maybe a virus that corrupts the BCD. It should be pretty tough for a standard user to mess with the file by accident..

I've already scanned it using Kaspersky 2010 and Malwarebytes.
They found a few things and they were removed.

Happens when the boot file gets slightly corrupted and the checksum doesn't match. Run a full disk check on the drive.

Scanned the drive for errors and it said it found some and fixed it.
But the problem is still there.

Is the only option left to reformat?

Just backup his files / drivers and format. Save ya a lot of time. :)

If there isn't an obvious solution and you have tried the usual things then your better off wiping it.

Did you use the recovery disk to rebuild the boot file? Assuming the corrupt sectors should now be bypassed it shouldn't happen again. Other then that, it might be worth your while to reformat yes.
