New business/ marketing idea

    I have a new business/ service idea but I'm just wondering what people here think of it. I have almost 14 years web design and development experience and about 6 years SEO experience. I have a lot of experience analyzing website visitor patterns and habits.

    My idea is to create sales leads for clients by advertising their services online, through a website, online advertising, Google listings and other marketing avenues. For retail clients we could build online shops and visitor referral as well as visitor loyalty systems. So basically we say to clients, give us permission to build you an online presence and use your logo for it and we will send sales your way. We would charge per sale made. So perhaps 20% - 35% of the sale price per sale. Up to now we have simply being building websites but we're not responsible for sales on the website if you understand.

    I'm just wondering do you think businesses would be interested in this service? Do you think we should charge an up-front fee and cut it out of the future sales made or do you think businesses would go for this?

    Any criticism/ information would be helpful.

    nice idea, but it sounds like you are trying to get a cut on sales, when any normal company that wanted a new website & for it to be optimised would just pay for this and not have to give a percentage of their sales, no?

    sure there are companies that might go for it as the time involved in building an online presence is out of their hands, but don't SEO companies provide all this without taking a cut anyway?

    SEO companies would provide a top 10 Google listing for certain keywords. This may increase visitors to your website but it doesn't necessarily translate into sales. There are many marketing ideas that would be used to ensure regular and ongoing sales for the company. There are many ingredients to actually create a sale or regular sales, SEO is just one of them.

    The hard part for us would be funding our first project as there are costs involved with building a website, SEO, analyzing traffic, creating a customer database, creating newsletters, creating promotional plans, creating customer loyalty programmes and discount systems for customers.

    We would basically ask the company if they would like to increase their sales and then it is up to us to create them. If the company want monthly reports on our progress, if they want to know how we are creating said sales and how we are using their logo this can also be done.

    Essentially our end plan would be for the company to see an increase in their sales. We can provide our clients with a customer database (built over time) which will show them information on their customers, what they buy, what they are interested in buying, we can provide targeted selling techniques and information so our clients aren't shoving products in customer's faces when they don't want them.

    Building all of this cost money so working on a flat fee would be easier for us. The only issue with this is proving to our client that we can create sales for them. If we work on a percentage of sales basis, the client only pays when they make a sale through us.

    Its a good idea. I have clients that could sell online but dont want to invest the few thousand euro expense of a website. You are taking the risk away from them so they should be happy to give you a cut of their margin.

    ha ha, that's true Suey71. It would be a much lesser amount. I was simply stating that % as an example.

    It seems unsustainable, if you're taking a % of profits, and as soon as their site is successful, what's to stop them reinvesting and developing their own site? Are you going to control the domain? If so that would be far more risky than setting up on themselves.

    He is selling leads. He gets the cut on the initial sale. If they decide that they don't want any more leads, they end their arrangement with him.

    OP has to find good clients and trust them to make this work.
