How do we know he's ageless? And why does this need its own thread?

He did drink the water though iirc

He's entitled to post any thread he likes, he's not trolling or whining!!!!

As for Hurley, it is implied in the Finale that he did live a very long time. When Christian said 'some died before you, some a long time after you', he's implying Hurley protected the Island with Ben for a very long time. How it makes sense i'm not sure. Jacob said a little chant over the water when he gave it to Jack; Jack didn't. Maybe the chant/prayer/even the water itself is not important, it's empowering the person themselves to believe. To have faith. Bit lame and weak overall but i'd like to think it makes more sense than a magic prayer.

I don't think the prayer/chant thing was important at all.

Jacob did the chant with Jack in the aincient language as his mother had done the same. Remember they were not really speaking English to each other so that prayer would have been in their native language.

Jack did not speak the language or learn the chant so he didn't do it.

Think it was just a custom that belonged to Jacob's & his mother's culture.

What is implied is that drinking water from the source gives you a sort of immortality and saying a chant/prayer is totally irrelevant,

I think there must be some sort of handover involved, otherwise everyone could have drank the water.

Jack asked if Hurley had something to drink from and Ben handed Jack an Oceanic branded empty water bottle. Hurley drank the water and Jack said "you're like me now".

My guess is that whoever the current protector of the island is has to touch the container that holds the water to pass on his powers. Otherwise Hurley (and Jack before him) could have just scooped up some water with their hands and drank it. That's just my theory though.

I don't know about living forever but the water that Jack gave Hurley was so brown that it looked like any normal person would probably have dropped dead drinking it!

I think the fact that the current protector hands over the water is the key. Also the area can only be found by a protector and could
not be found by anyone else.

While Jack didn't do the chant or anything, I think the main points are:

The current protector must give the candidate something to drink (Jacob and his mother drank wine, whereas Jack and Hurley drank water)
The protector must touch the candidate
They must say "Now we're the same"

If i remember it correctly, when Jacob's mother gave him wine she said the chant so the wine was blessed.

When Jacob said the chant he said it over water in his hand and then dropped it back inthe stream. Then he re-filled the bottle he gave Jack from that stream.

Jack gave hurley water from the same stream so is it not that when Jacob said the chant he blessed the stream and not the water in a vessel?

No chant is needed! so long as the two agree to it,its not important!! Think of it has the water being the clarification that both agree....

and yes Hurley becomes new Jacob and elects Ben to be his Advisor(also granting Ben immortality)

its shown in the last scene with Hurley and Ben outside Eloise's church!!
HURLEY:(to Ben) You were a great Number 2!!
BEN: You were a great Number 1!!

At the time I was thinking Ben was going to have a cheeky sip when no one was looking.

I'm going to do my best to forget about this water ceremony crap, its so far removed from the Lost I loved.

I think Jack did do the chant though. I think it was when Sawyer came up behind him earlier in the episode, as Jack is standing in the river, it shows you briefly Jack saying something to himself before he turns to speak with Sawyer. Maybe Jack knew from the moment he drank from the cup what was going to happen, he did seem pretty confident of what was about to go down.

That doesn't mean that Hurley made Ben immortal. We don't know how long Ben, or Hurley for that matter, played out their new roles.

id assume ben became to hurley, what richard was to jacob,

its really odd how many people still dont understand what actually happened, even when i explain that scene with ben and hurley they still dont get it,

That doesn't mean Ben was immortal. Don't forget Richard was only immortal because he asked Jacob to make him immortal because he didn't want to die and go to hell.
