Extraction Question

    Hi Guys.

Had the back tooth next to my wisdom tooth reomoved on my right lower side on Saturday, just wondering if you guys could answer me a few questions.

Took an hour and a half to get the tooth out as my family have always had hugely strong roots to our molars, so had to be surgical extraction and broken up to bits to come out.

I had bleeding for a good few hours on Saturday night, but stopped in the early hours of Sunday morning when I had a little pain which I dealt with with 400mg of Ibuprofen and it passed after a few hours and a blood clot has now formed and no real pain since Since then the diet I am on is literally water, yoghurt drinks and ice creams.

Now the problem is the blood clot is right at the back and pretty tall and I feel the back of my tongue roll over it since the early hours of Sunday, I'm scared to hell that I am going to dislodge it, but so far nothing has come away. I was wodnering what you guys can recommend to ensure this does not happen.

Don't worry I won't poke at it smoke as I don't smoke or eat dry foods just yet but I am due to go back to work on Thursday and fly home on Wednesday and I really cannot afford to take too much more time off, as I was originally on vacation for four days, my flight got cancelled and delayed for two days, and a day before the flight my tooth really got infected and inflamed my whole face so I needed to have emergency treatment on it so not been a good few days or so for me.

My dentist was really good and smoothed the bone out and packed it nd gave me antibiotics and ketoprofen painkillers if I needed them, but touch wood the ibuprofren has done the trick so far.

Sounds like things are going okay. You are now 2 days after the extraction, so I wouldn't worry about the blood clot to be honest. Keep the area very clean with gentle rinsing of hot saltwater and treat the pain as you have been. Each day will get a little better.

It'll take a fair bit to remove the clot. I had a molar removed about 5 days ago so I know how you feel - I'm still utterly terrified of accidently dislodging the clot. A few times my tongue has inadvertantly touched off the clot, but my clot is still there and I've been doing the same as you - on a liquid diet and I'm only eating on the opposite side of the tooth extraction.

As for the clot, so far so good for me - just stick with what you're doing and rinse out your mouth gently with salt and water. As long as you avoid touching the clot as much as you can (it's impossible to not touch off it at least once) and don't aggrevate it it should be fine.

    Thanks for the answers.

Got the cert this morning and they checked me out and said they are very happy with how the recovery is going considering the fact it was a very complicated extraction that had to be performed.

Suggested I should be fine to travel tommorow and return to work on Thursday but advised on resting my jaw until Thursday as it's quite swollen and to work no overtime until next week. They also gave me some tablets which they dissolved around the socket to help me with the pain as it was bigger today, which was a big help.

Told I can return to very soft food tommorow as long as I eat on the opposite side and gradually step it up over the coming days.

Looks like I was celebrating a little too early.

On Wednesday had the odd bit of throbbing sharp pain here and there, but nothing out of this world, and the throbbing I did have was controlled by normal nurofen plus so I couldn't really moan.

Thursday and Friday were a whole different ball game though, I feel sharp pain on and off randomly ever since these days, i'll be fine for half an hour and then in pain for half an hour, tried to figure out any possible reason why but couldn't come to any conclusion, it seems random and alternates every half an hour no matter what I do.

I am rinsing my mouth as normal with mouthwash etc and avoiding all foods but soft foods and liquid foods. It does not appear to be dry socket as it is not sensitive at all to water, liquid or food, eg, I can swish the area with hot water or cold water with no pain at all, just feels normal so I think that means I do not have dry socket if my thinking is correct.

I do feel like something is sitting in my gums though, like when you get food stuck somewhere, and it's been like that for the last few days, but I'm unsure if that is just not the blood clot or the site healing which I can feel, I've tried to direct water there and swish and roll the water as hard as I can, again with no increase in pain to try and dislodge something, but so far it has not worked.

Thankfully Ketoprofen seems to be a very good painkiller for this problem with it's sharp pain, so I'm using this right now, but it's not really the answer at work as it leaves me so much out of it, that I am losing attention on conference calls pretty quickly, and that cannot help my work.

    Any ideas?

It doesn't sound like dry socket anyway, unless the pain is in your ear aswell I think, and as long as the clot is still there.
It could be a bone fragment or something since you had to have the tooth broken up,sometimes they can stay in there, but the body rejects them by itself, haven't experienced it myself but I'd say it'd be sore alright.

Ring you dentist if you're still worried about it though.
Since you've got yours out a while ago now, could I ask you a few Qs?:o
What was the healing process like? What did it look like?
I got mine out on Thursday(same tooth as yours) and the first day it was completely empty, woke up on day 2 and it was full(blood clot I presume?) day 3 today and pain is getting better by the day,but still very tender in the jaw,the extraction site has some white stuff on it and feels a bit lower(emptier?).
    How did yours go?
Thanks a million and best of luck:)
