Not too sure if anyone has heard, but Mike Conway had a huge crash
at the Indy 500 after colliding with Ryan Hunter-Reay, who was out of petrol.

Conway has a "leg injury", and no-one else was injured.
It's a great testament to how far safety has come since Zanardi's horrific
    crash back in 2001.

I always wondered what would happen if you put a no left hand turn sign up.

As amazing as that is, how anyone can consider Indy 500 motorsport is beyond me. You'd have more excitement at your local Go-Karting track.

To be fair the Indy 500 is just the one race, there are a lot of other "normal" tracks in the series too.

That was a crazy crash alright. I was amazed to see the whole car behind the driver just fall off. Crazy impact.

As its outside the safety cell for the driver I would assume it designed to do that to aid force dissipation

Had the out of petrol bit anything to do with the crash?

I think the sudden slow down of the front car as it ran out of petrol caused the crash. The 2nd car couldn't slow or move quick enough. The drag off the aero pieces would slow the car down very quickly once engine power is gone

The in board camera of the No.3 driver, not the one in the crash: That's amazing reactions right there...well....getting out of the way!

Would that be because the "car" is lighter once it falls off?

I understand it would take a lot of force to take the rest of the car off, taking some of the force out of the crash. Though, just thinking about crumple zones it would make more sense to my untrained mind for it to stay there absorbing some more impact.
Its interesting how the forces at play work.

Its great he got out of it with only a leg injury!!
