I have an old diesel tank I want to wash out, cut in half and reuse to collect rain water for garden use. How do you clean out the old diesel

I wouldn't if I were you... diesel is notoriously hard to eradicate and any trace will kill all before it...

You can pick up IBC tanks from about €35, just ensure they were for foodstuff and they will be fine... we use them and they are great as they can be lifted full by the cage...

You should shift the old diesel tank for more than the cost of the IBC :)

If you insist on it, detergents break up the oils, large amounts of that and warm water.
    Industrial washingup liquid

Also, at heavy machinery shops (e.g. escavators, tractors etc) or marine shops you may be able to find specialist dispersants like seaclean.

But at 35 EUR the IBC tanks mean you wont have a possibility of contamination

A diesel or oil tank will never be cleaned out enough to allow for its usuage as a water store....

    Not by normal diy means

All of the above. I would definitely no use an old oil tank for water. You will never get rid of it properly from the tank. IBC's would be the way to go
