I have reduced sky+ packages to basic, no premium any more. I am using 2 ports on the lnb, 2 still free. I am looking to put another receiver HD for the world cup and beyond. Is there a difference between fta and something that I can get RTE on and something with a 7 day epg and recording. I would like all of that but might have to settle for much less. FTA channels with BBC and ITV hd for world cup might make it worthwhile.

I have heard of receivers from Powercity, B&Q, LIDL etc. would these do ? Is there something better, max spend €150. I could self install if it is only a matter of running 2 new cables.

Hi Ros123, you can indeed use the extra ports on the LNB for Free to Air or Freesat.

While the receivers in B&Q and Lidl do the job in terms of viewing they don't have 7 day epg (program guide) or a program planner. You could go with an official freesat box SD or the more expensive HD box, both have planners, 7 day epg and don't require rescans every time a channel moves as they updated automatically.

Another option would be to get a 2nd Sky box and use that without a card or subscription to receive free to air satellite, again you'll have the planner and 7 day epg. Channels like Sky One still show up on the epg but if you try to view them you'll get a pop up error saying you need a subscription. If you go with this option it may be worth getting a HD box and reading this thread " http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055812228 ".

You say you have a Sky plus package, I think you could get sky to upgrade your current standard SD + box to a HD box without the need for a HD sub and keep your old and use it as the 2nd receiver http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055812228&page=20

If you want RTE you could try a SAT/DTT combo box - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055792912 . No 7 day EPG on the sat channels and you'll need to be in an area where DTT is available, rabbits ears aerials may be able to pick up the signal depending on where you are.

jobyrne30, thanks for that, it made it easier to understand. I rang sky to see how much to upgrade the box, without the hd subscription, €199 + €60 installation. The 60 installation is dreadful for what they have to do.

I am interested in the Richer sounds option but when I look at the cost I wonder is the sky HD box not that expensive, it has 3d capability, although I have a 1 1/2 year old 42" Pany that I have no intention of changing.

Is the £99 option from RS a good option ?

3d dosn't come into it unless you get a new tv. :)

That seem to be expensive according to the the first page on wizards007 thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055812228 €99 for the box & €60 for install.

It seems like good value but I don't have one myself so can't say for sure.

Some might say the goodmans or grundig boxes are better - http://cgi.ebay.ie/Goodmans-HD-High-Definition-Freesat-Receiver-GFSAT200HD-/270496055596?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_ConEle_SatCableFreeview_RL&hash=item3efad2412c

No not changing my tv, I have an 18 month old 42" Panasonic that is more than I'll need for a few years. Haven't really got the full benefit of it without hd although sd is very good on it.

I mentioned the 99 + 60 deal but the guy said I didn't qualify ? The interesting thing about the RS option is the Iplayer, will this work without an internet connection and a proxy server ?

The grundig option on e-bay looks good value...
