Basically im starting a job as a holiday worker in france for the summer and when my contract is up im visiting a friend in birmingham afterwards, im talking the tgv/channel tunnel/ train because i intend on bringing back alot of wine back as presents:D.
What i was wondering is that if i was to rent off hertz/avis there, could i return it to them at an irish base or is this even possible
    any advice welcome?

    Try ringing them and asking?

I know that if you rent a car in, say, Bordeaux & want to return it in Span or in Paris (i.e. far away) there is a surcharge, something in the order of hundreds of euro.

I noticed a similar charge would have been due when I wanted to hire a car in LA & drop it off in Vegas. In fact they wouldn't facilitate me at all with the car I eventually hired as it was a "Premium" rental (A6 Quattro, they wouldn't let mectake it out of the state). I ended up dropping it off in San Fran instead.
I would imagine that UK rental cmpanies would have the same issue with taking one of their cars out of UK. But as the previous poster says, ring around to find out. I would be very surprised if they did accept the idea.

Might be cheaper to leave it up north,
If you have trouble leaving the 'state' leave mainland uk via the ferry route to belfast....

It's probably possible, but there will be a substantial 1 way drop charge as someone from Hertz/Avis UK will have to come over to get the car.

Avis's 1 way drop charge between ROI and NI is €150 to put things in perspective.

Best bet would be to leave the UK rental car in Holyhead - Hertz definately used to have a base there, and collect an ROI car at Dun Loghaire (sp?) where Enterprise have a base. You can then drop the ROI car at the closest Enterprise location to wherever you are heading in Ireland.

Might be a bit of a pain carrying all the cases of wine on to the ferry though...........

Have you considered having your stuff shipped home by a freight company? It's likely to be cheaper than just the surcharge on a one way car rental, you'll also save the fare for the car on the ferry and it will open up the option of cheap flights to BHX, then DUB.

Ya hertzs charge is something very similar, almost makes the idea unworkable when you factor in ferry, petrol etc.

might do as another poster suggested and leave it up north, could work better

I think you'll still be looking at a 1 way charge dropping in NI as there is still the sea to cross even though it's still UK.

I just ran a quote on Hertz.com for 3 days over a weekend in June and the cheapest from Birmingham to Belfast is over €1,100 for a Picanto

Buy a car over there for around £300, drive home, advertise it over here for €300. Job done! :)

Hetz charge 750 queenheads plus tax to collect the car from Ireland.

    c. 40 to leave it at Holyhead.

Shouldn't be any one way charge to leave it at Holyhead if it's being picked up from a corporate location (which BHX is). If it's going the other way there may be a charge as I think Holyhead is a franchise location.

Your not allowed to ship booze via freight, otherwise you'd have lads posting bottles of vodka from Poland :P

Interesting. That's what I was quoted/charged. Pick up LHR.

Drop charge? Or was that just the rate for a 1 day rental?

+1 on the cheap car idea. Pick up something bulletproof and cheap - a micra for example, and use that. Sell it when you get it back here.

40 Drop plus the extra day.

I wasn't too perturbed given the earlier quote for a Dublin drop.
