Keeping in left lane on motorways / dual carriage ways

Today cruising on N7 - as usual everyone in fast lane and slowest lane relatively empty

What is the law on people pulling left when possible and using outer lanes for overtaking?

Why don't RSA have a campaign to make people more aware / enforce it?

I understand people in Ireland have a dual carriage way mentality where you turn right off the fast lane at traffic lights

People crawling along in fast lane infuriates me !! Just move to the left - please!?

    To my shame :o

In 2008 I drove my motorcycle down the N7 southbound from Dublin to Limerick.

From Dublin to Naas I was a middle lane hogger.
    Why?

Because the signage seemed clear to me that if you stayed in the left lane you'd be forced down the next exit and I didn't want that, I was going straight on.

I can't comment on the signage these days, I've not driven that route since. But it was unclear to me at the time, is it still the same?

Flame me if you want, have you passed an A and B driving test?

The dodgy gantries on the N7 that made it look like the left hand lane dropped have long since been replaced.

Fair enough, I did say it was 2008 when I last drove that route.

And as you posted, they were unclear at the time

The signage on all carriageways 2 or 3 laned and motorways are quite visable and clear.
It's one of these things, people automatically assume by getting into the overtaking lane (there is no such thing as a fast or a slow lane) that they will get to their destination quicker and this is why the overtaking lane slows down.
Also there are distractions, people on mobiles, rubber neckers and the likes.

I think lack of awareness is a factor.

I drove in Spain and France and if you hog the outermost lane there you are blasted out of it by upcoming vehicles up your ass.

    I find it crazy here.

Funny I was driving back from Limerick today and was thinking the same thing. Strange thing though was it only started to happen from around naas on, obviously more traffic closer to dublin, but still kinda thinking was much worse in vicinity of dublin than down country. Gardai really should do something as it just slows down overall traffic, gets people frustrated, and leads to people undertaking which is dangerous.

    +1

Theoritically, if some is driving in the "FAST" lane (aka the overtaking lane) at say 100 kmh. Then no one can legally do any faster than that, as to do so would result in undertaking and if the letter of the law is enforced or you meet a pi$$ed off AGS member on TC duty you will be penalised.

I will confess it was something I used to do (not at 100kmh mind), but have long since got out of the habit.

Theres many many more if you search back through the forum also - maybe the OP wasnt sure whether to drag up an old thread and have it closed, or have a new thread sidetracked with statements like yours - its a quandry in a fast moving like this one.

    :P

There are a few ramps on the M50 (one just around the Red Cow heading north) where the merge land is about 20 yrds and people entering the motorway just breeze out at 60kph oblivious.
Other than this example I stay left....even to the point of undertaking :o

I've tried flashing MLM's but to no avail, they obviously assume I should venture into lane 3.
