I would look at POS software first. It is generally possible for it to be linked back to different accounts systems and the POS will be by far the bigger investment.

    thanks for the reply

but any suggestions in POS software, had used Touch POS http://www.touchpos.ie in the past but don't think it has anyway of linking back to accounts package

I use an INTACT accounts package. My business is not retail but INTACT has a comprehensive point of sale system, CRM tool, SRM, full stock control factility etc.
i got it installed in 2006. The system can be used remotely both on and off site, very helpful for my sales staff.

Generally if it has the ability to output CSV files it can then be imported into accounts systems.
You would have to enquire about its ability to export information.

I know someone who uses the Intact accounting package and POS system. It is all link together and apparently very easy to use. As far as I know they do touch screens as well.

    I am connected to Sage.

Sage offer both an accounts package incorporating a stock control module (Purchase orders, stock levels, minimum order quantities, despatch notes, sales orders) and a POS system.

These can be used seperately or in conjunction with each other.

Will you be selling items in a retail environment i.e through a POS system where you will provide the customer with a reciept and track stock seperately? or will you be selling to customers and providing them with a sales order and an invoice? Will you be delivering to customers and taking orders by phone or will this all be in person? These are important factors to consider as they will determine what you need.

Microsoft Retail Management system is quite reasonable and has a well supported userbase,

There's a huge range of add-on tools written by various suppliers as well ..from stock control, credit cards, additional devices etc... and its very user friendly from a staff and maintenance point of view (familiar with windows you'll get around it fast!) and quite customizable out of the box.

Its also been written with multi-branch scalability in mind.

BTW I'm no fan of Microsoft normally, but they did a darn fine job with their point of sale solution.

They have a free trial .. no harm in looking
