I have recently purchased a new mac book and have most of the useful applications and software for it but is there any other cool useful ones, or even any tips or trick for a mac book

I'd recommend Quicksilver. Its a application launcher that works by indexing your apps/files and you open them by typing in a part of their name. Dead handy and much faster than digging through windows looking for your app.

True, but I always found the indexer in spotlight to be a little bit on the heavy side. So I kinda stopped using it an forgot about it.

No, it doesn't. When your Mac is in sleep mode it is for all intents and purposes off. There's just a tiny bit of power keeping the RAM active so you can pick up where you left off. If it is downloading with the lid closed then it's not actually asleep. When in sleep mode the light at the front should be slowly pulsing. If there's a steady glow that means the Macbook is still on.

As an aside: Macbooks take way too long to go to sleep because of that stupid hibernation mode that Apple added a few years ago. I suspect a lot of hard drives get bumped to death due to people moving their Macbooks too quickly after closing the lid. I use a utility called SmartSleep to disable hibernation unless the battery is below 20 percent. My MBP goes to sleep much quicker as a result.
