Very interesting, seems like ancient history! The Spanish Civil war was going on when Mayo won that first all-Ireland. Another player from that team, Josie Munnelly used to drink in Mick Byrne's, met him a few times.

There was a few characters on the 50-51 teams, one was Padraic Carney, they used to fly him in from the US for matches, called him the Flying Doctor!

David Brady is writing a column for the Sunday World, predicted Mayo to win next Saturday, made the point that the Cork match is still fresh in their minds and that they have it all to prove.

    Lovely article.

Was interested to read about Purty Kelly and his toughness. His son settled in my home town and coached me boxing along with his own sons, one of whom has been known exclusively as Purty for at least the last 10-12 years.
