94 Mini Cooper wont start

    Advice needed,

I have a 94 Mini Cooper. it has been lying up for a year or so. the throttle cable broke(rusted)

Am trying to get it started.

there is fuel say 2 gallons(bit less). My nephew has convinced me that cars that run out need lots of petrol to get them started. It is not just a matter of a half gallon?

The engine fires up on easy start or on petrol sprayed into the intake, so ignition is not a problem.

there is no fuel emerging from the pipe from the tank.

I cannot figure out if there is an electrical pump, that is not pumping or if there is a fuel blockage in the pipes.

Have tried to go on the Mini forum just now but cannot get registered,
Any advice (treat me as an idiot)

Well I would say that your fuel pump is banjaxed or a filter in it is blocked with stain fuel and crud.Or maybe an external fuel filter is blocked or split pipe.

Thanks, do you know if it is an electric pump, and if so where is it.
while trawling the web earlier I saw a comment that it is mechanical driven pump at rear of engine with a seal/gasket that can fail.

Older Minis had an electric pump in the boot.

I am no expert on mini's but in general if you follow the fuel line from the carb/throttle body/injector down to where it goes, be it to a mechanical or electric pump you should be able to see which it is.If it has wires to it then its electric (funny enough;)) and if mechanical then it would have the pipes going to it.Of course it could be in the tank itself too.

AFIK a Mini of that age should have a mechanical pump. The pumps are madfe of aluminium alloy, but if they're lying up fpr a year or two it's common for the pump valves to plug up with a sort of aluminium oxide/water mixture.

Disconnect the fuel line where it enters the pump (the pipe on the passenger side) and suck it to see if you can get a good flow from the tank. Keep a bottle of water handy as a mouthful of fuel will be most unpleasant and will make the skin on your face very raw.

If you can get a good flow of fuel then remove the pump (two 13mm nuts I believe). Operate the lever by hand & see if you can get fuel flow. If the pump can be dismantled, open it up & clean it out, taking care not to damage the diaphragm. If it's a sealed unit you can try submerging it in fuel and tapping it to get out the dirt. This probably won't work & you'll need a new one, but they're not expensive.
