Cheapest Irish DID number?

Having moved abroad I am looking to get an Irish dial in number so that my elderly parents don't have the expence of long distance phone charges.

I'm sure a non-geo 076 number will do nicely, does anyone know the cheapest solution for getting an 076 number?

Cheapest option I can find so far is www.mydivert.com which works out at €3.50 per month (this seems to include VAT but I am unsure from their website)

Is there any cheaper solution, such as getting a free number with a PAYG voip accont?

    Thanks

    D-M

Blueface issue an 076 number with their PAYG account ..... and that has a minimum of €5 payment.

Be aware that 076 numbers are not regarded by Eircom as being the same as geographic numbes and are not included in any phone 'bundles' someone may be signed up to.

Which means to ring an 076 number from a landline incurs the full cost of the call.

Cheers Johnboy for the info, even if the 076 calls are not included in Eircom's bundles am I correct in thinking that they are charged as a local rate call from anywhere in Ireland? That appears to be the info on the Blueface site, I have tried searching for call rates on the Eircom website without any success, Eircom make it so easy for customers

It's not easy to find Eircom's rates and there's a very good reason why ;)

Eircom's general pricing page is here

For those not lured into a bundle, you can enjoy the current 'Part 2 -Customer Dialled Calls' rates here (make sure you're sitting down first though) :

Cheers! I sat down and read the 'Part 2 -Customer Dialled Calls' rates and that confirms 076 calls are charged at local rates which beats the hell out of 38.72 cent per minute for band 3 calls.

Now if only Blueface's registration process would complete correctly for me I'd be all set

If all you need is for your E.Ps. to be able to call you then the likes of Dialwise.ie or Cheapcalls.ie might be sufficient & simples:)

I realise it may be unlikely, but if your parents have an internet connection then you could set up a cheap ATA and an old phone with another Blueface or other VOIP provider account, and make calls between you, free of call cost. Just thought I would mention it. ;)

Cheers, but they have no internet.

Just having a look at Dialwise and Cheapcalls now, I hadn't come across them as I had always used 13434 myself previously.

I presume that the service from Dialwise and Cheapcalls is OK and no one has had any billing issues? Seems like the calls would end up costing the same i.e. a local rate call.

I too was looking for cheap DID, not a lot of choice really. I found this company, which is Irish. But 3.95 * 12 is a bit steep per year for a few digits.

Your way better off with 076 (as I looked at Eircom rates above^, which I guess other providers based off, but cheaper) as it's priced as a local call. The problem is like what the OP has, older people and the like are not sure of the cost, because it's not a 'normal' number. Top up €5 with Blueface, it's a good deal and fixed cost for a number.

I went with the PAYG Blueface account with the 076 number in the end and am very happy with the service and call quality, it's much superior to any of the various Betamax voip services I have used previously, I really can't tell any difference from my standard landline and have never had so much as an echo never mind a dropped call.

I have it hooked up with a Linksys PAP2 and a Panasonic Dect phone and use it for all my international calls.

Just had a look at my Blueface account and it's only cost me a total of €22 in calls in the 10 months I have been using it. Would have been mad to pay out €3.95 a month just for the DID number.

Just a comment on the quality of the Betamax voice calls ...... I now use both Blueface and one of the Betamax services because I can get free landline calls to US, UK, & Australia from the Betamax service ....

the call quality was not good initially, but when I changed the voice codec used to a higher quality one things improved to the point there is little difference between Betamax and Blueface call quality now.

I seem to have found the best combination for me ...... Blueface PAYG and Betmax.

    Sorry NOOB question

But when you say you changed the codec where did you do that?

Are you using a softphone or an ATA?

An ATA built into my router.
It allows me to register six VOIP services and set up dial plans so the most cost effective is used automatically when phoning out.

If you are using a softphone then it should be possible to select the order of preference for the codecs used.
At least I see that here in Linphone and also Twinkle.

I suspect the receiving party must have the same codec available else another is negotiated for the call.

Just thought you'd like to know:

Eircom voip service is not available anymore but you can as always call VoiP numbers from your eircom landline.
The cheapest irish DID is the blueface 076 and then local numbers with Goldfish.ie.

    Hope this helps.

I had not heard that Eircom had stopped the VOIP service ..... did they make any announcement? There are still lots of webpages up about it apparently.

Thanks for any links or such you may have about this.

Thanks for any links or such you may have about this.

I contacted eircom Business Service regarding VoIP and this is the reply I got:

”I was just advised that eircom do not offer voip service anymore.

    Thanking you for your enquiry.”

I was informed and they would take a note of the voip section of the website.

It would seem that they weren't getting much out of the voip service and closed it off.
I will post up any more information I can find.
