Hi I recently purchased a new Wii console for my son. Everything was fine at the start, the colours where fine, but now it only shows games in Black and White and he is going mad.

    Is it a faulty console?

    He's only used it twice.

Its probably something simple to put right so any advice will be welcome.

    Thanks

    Hmm...

I'm pretty sure this is a 50 hz vs 60 hz issue. If you're tv doesnt support 60 hz then that should explain the black and white...I havnt done it in a while but I think there is an option in the settings menu to switch it to view in 50. (though most of this is coming from experiance with a dreamcast giving me similar problems years ago, I havnt used a 50 hz tv in a long time.)

If you know for a fact its not the 50/60 hz issue then colour issues are more likely to do with the video cable then the console itself. Have a look at the component cable and check that its secure at both ends and none of the pins have been bent in the scart adaptor. If you have a spare scart adaptor hanging around give it a try.

    Hi BlitzKrieg

Its definately not the TV. The TV is a 50 inch Panasonic Viera Full HD Plasma.

I checked the cables etc and no joy.

I know its something small but I just cant seem to fix it.

    Thanks anyway.

I could resolve the issue. First of all, the wire supplied with the wii is not compatible with your TV. This 3 point connector, will end up giving you b/w screen. So you need to buy the 5 pin connector. I bought from Frys for $19.99. The box says "High Performance Component HD A / V Cable" (like this one: http://www.bizrate.com/wii-accessories/oid875654433.html )
    In any case, do below
1> find the 5 point input row (vertical) on the back of your TV.
2> Insert the connector, in the sequence of Red pin being the bottom most. If its 5 pin connector, then start from the lowest point on the back of TV. If its 3 pin connector, use the top 3 points, on back of your TV. Red always being the bottom most in sequence.

Once again, buy the 5 pin connector, as inserting these pins on the back of your TV when the TV is already mounted on wall, is the hardest part to do...so why to waste your enerty in doing again and again. I am sure you would not like the black & white screen coming with 3 pin connector.

from here after a quick google of the tv + wii

What model is your Panasonic Lawrence? If the TV has a composite connection Yellow (video) Red (right sound) White (left Sound) then remove the scart connection at the end of the Wii cable and input these pins to the appropriate inputs on the TV. Your Wii will not output 60Hz RGB through the original lead that came with the console. You say that you are using AV-4? Isn’t that S-Video? S-Video is mainly used for DVD and Camcorders.

I had the same problem with a black and white picture output when I tried playing games through the S-Video on my Panasonic Q. Depending on your TV capabilities you may have the option to output NTSC, PAL and SECAM; if your TV is not set to PAL the picture will be in black and white.
