Hello all, just thought it would be an idea to start a religious photography thread. Anyone interested?

    I'll start with these:

most of thoes are badly composed , also some thing to note when photgraphing white statues is that lighting is even more important than useal

Thanks for the "constructive" criticism but at least I can spell!

I actually saw an image similar in style to your 5th photo above on an article about a Buddhist temple in China. Buddhist temples are very colorfully painted, usually with the Buddha in various scenes as well as demons/gods.

    Like this one;
    2393921431_4a71b8d3c1.jpg?v=0

The article I seen had an image of Jesus meditating alongside Siddhattha Gotama, apparently the locals believe Jesus was a student of the Buddha, but this is far from mainstream buddhism AFAIK.

Anyways just thought it was interesting, I don't actually have the image though sorry.

Edit: Heres a Buddhist picture depicting Jesus I found on google but its not the one I'm talking about.

Oh and just because, heres the Korean view of Jesus. I think this is from a Catholic painter here.

OK but it's not a whole lot of use criticizing the pics without offerering any constructive/helpful suggestions.

The constructiveness of my criticism is debatable , however the fact that you deliberately tried to cause offence is not . Why would I waste my time explaining the basics of composition to some one who is so clearly eager to offend and start an argument because they can not handle criticism ??

Apologies for the spelling jibe but "most of thoes are badly composed" comes across unhelpfully critical. And I took most of those pics when I was just getting into photography.

It was very helpfull if you took the time to relook at the composition,

It does not matter if you took them yesterday or 20 years ago you can not see the flaws you will mearly repeat your mistakes

Your main prob is the pic's are taken too close be safe ,take them further back and edit them later

ps was the first taken in rush??

OK, always a good idea. I don't know a whole lot about composition apart from the "rule" of thirds. So I've a lot to learn.

Yes, it was. What would you say about the composition? Should the statue be more to the right to give space on the left? Maybe taken more straight on so you can see both arms?

The rule of thirds is a good guide line for certen pics but it is only a guidline more important and fun to play around with is the leading line

I would may be center it by giving more space on the left, lower the levil it seems a bit of a sudon stop when you get to the bottom of the statue , this is why it is best to step back you can allways play around with it in editing , that is how you learn

I like the postion you have it but the arm does look a littel funny it also looks like he is leaning I would try moving a bit to the right just to see what it looks like , the great thing about digatal is you can take as manny shots as you like with out havting to worry about cost , as you get better you will take less but keep in mind a pro will still take up to 200 or 400 shots of the one image and only have 3 or 4 they will be willing to use

    Hi Kelly1,

I'm also a photographer and I just want to say that I really like your pictures. I think crotalus667 did come across as very crass in his first comment. I'm glad he followed it up with some pointers.

I disagree that you need to zoom out. The tighter crop will generally result in a shallower focus so you get that nice blur which will give emphasis to your subject rather than your background. You're framing in the first pic is a bit off but if you're just starting out its no big deal. Also the sign of a good photographer is someone who does not need to edit much so I recommend trying to frame it when you take it rather then relying on editing every pic afterwards. This can be time consuming but of course if you're in a rush giving it a bit more space would be better so you have more options.

Your 4th shot could be rotated a little bit clockwise. Otherwise, I think your exposure is great and I particularly like your 6th shot. Nice work! :)

Thanks Kelly, good job, I'm not one to care about whether it was taken with a disposable cam or professional one, artistic photos are artistic photos regardless of the quality of camera they are taken with.

We can all do better in any area of work we do. I as an unprofessional photographer saw your photos and loved them, I'd even frame a few, but unfortunately those who are experienced in that line of work are obviously gonna have their say, I find them to be a bit like wine tasters, very snooty and annoying, just give me the bottle and let me drink it. :pac:

just listen to them ''a little to the left, a little to the right'' Come on!!!

I wasn't trying to be snooty at all. In fact I wouldn't even have mentioned it if kelly1 wasn't being picked up on it in the first place. Only reason I said that about the photo was because following crotalus667 comment, it seemed like she was looking for constructive criticism. Obviously photography is something that she cares about. I appreciate people telling me how I can improve on things too, I'm by no means an expert either.

I understand what you mean, but the poster before you ''crotalus''? there is nothing worse and more cringe like than to see people like himself come and wave around his ''I'm a professional photographer'' picket, and then play the ''Diva'' card by saying ''why should I give you any constructive criticism?''

Seriously like...just leave Kelly alone and let him have his thread on religious art without ruining it with these silly arguments, I've had my say, I'll leave it at that. Sorry for ruining your thread kelly1. My apologies also if my posts came across as a bit crude, it wasnt intentional.

Kelly , in your last post 2 i like (it's in need of a bit of editing when taking pics like that it is important to try and keep the sides symmetrical the eye tends to notice some thing is off if it is lead into some thing that is off centre)

5 is a perfect example why you need to step back , you have cut off the sides of the artwork , I would of left some of the wall to the side in the pic

OK, I've had to delete a post because the message wasn't being received.

    Again, no more arguing.

Really like the idea of this thread - even if I'm not very religious myself!

Don't think it needs to be all statues and images though. So here's something a little different:

I had a nice one of the cross in the phoenix park, but I can't for the life of me find it!
