what do you mean by addressing the safety

i presume the awkward positioning of it?

Or the fact that you have to set the weapon to Fire in order to cock it.

russian mentality, the first fire position is also full-auto. Your edging towards western thinking being able to cock it with the safety on.

There was definately reasoning behind that. Quote:The splendid idea for these guns is to have the position for lever in semi-auto as the bottom position. The normal action for a soldier who lacks battle experience when he comes under fire is to squeeze the gun and the trigger as hard as he can. He will simply empty his gun with full automatic fire. When he has overcome his first chock he finds his gun empty! That is why the Russians positioned the semi auto position in the far end. When a soldier remove the safety he normally hits the lever with the side of his hand and the gun is ready to fire – in semi automatic! US Army had similar experiences of the soldiers behaviour but they changed their M16 to shoot three shot burst in one position. Russian weapons are simpler and more crude but still effective: Quote.

Personally I reckon that having to take your hand off fire control to do so is a bit dated by todays standards. Why not sort that whilst "facelifting" the AK.

It does seem unusual that they haven't changed the safety lever considering many companies in the US have modified Ak levers like Krebs http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=137198

What exactly have they done to the rifle itself apart from the Polymer black R.I.S funiture?

Based on different links they have changed the rear sight bloc, added a new safety, changed the pistol grip and added a lock to the dust cover.
