Making your own Wedding Dress

    Hi

My partner and I are thinking of getting married in late October this year maybe in Jamaica, As this seems the least expensive area for a package deal,
I have my heart set on a belted lace dress and of course the dress I love is originally designed by Monique Lhuillier, and naturally over my budget!
    Please see the below:

I just want some advice and feedback really, am I being naive in thinking I can do this with no experience, or would I be better meeting with an experienced dress maker?
I have no idea of the prices charged in the Munster area?
Or better still does anyone know of a place that sells preatty elegant dresses really really cheaply in Munster?

    Thanks so much

No experience as in you have never sewed before or you can sew but have never made a dress?? The design to me looks fairly ok, but thats because I can sew and would take a shot at it for myself but you would pick up a pattern like this dress fairly easy online or in Hickeys... Taking that pattern then to a dressmaker, she/he would let you know the time involved price, material required etc.

I will say the pressure to make your own wedding dress is immense if you're not confident in dress-making. Have you tried online for your dress? You may pick it up, or a knock off version for cheaper??

This I found to be a huge problem when I was looking with my sister (she getting married before me) She had no interest in a "wedding dress" and to find a style that was just a plain, simple, white dress was a nightmare.. Munster to be honest for cheap, plain but nice dresses is a shambles. Unless your lucky in the likes of Tk Max... We were told Debenhams, Marks and Spencers and while they did have some nice stock, my sister thought they looked cheap. She did buy her veil and head piece from Debenhams but we got the dress online. I got my dress online too... Might be worth a look? :)

just a thought, but i really considered making my wedding dress but was warned by everyone that it was bad luck for the bride to make her own dress, you could probably show that pic to a good dress maker and she would find it easy enough to make.

There are loads of websites which will make any dress for a fraction of the usual cost. I have posted about this before - PM me if you want details of the place I used.
Oh and good luck with the wedding planning - Jamaica sounds fab

Bad luck schmad luck! But as hazeler said, I'm not sure whether you mean 'no experience' sewing or making a dress for yourself, or what. Either way, I think it's a lot of pressure to make your own wedding dress if you're not sure of your ability. And if it doesn't come out the way that you want, you might end up with a lot of frustration.

I'd see if you can find a good dressmaker in the area -- it might be cheaper than some of the other options, but you'll be able to work closely with them and customize your dress.

Or . . . check out eBay! Seriously, a lot of brides are looking to get rid of their dresses for a reasonable price. You just might find exactly what you want for a fraction of retail price.

Yeah I'd check out ebay- people rave about some of the sellers in China who can make dresses for great prices. You could contact them and show them your picture and see if they would quote you?

    What is your budget?

If you've made up patterns for dresses in the past then I'd say go for it but if you really have no experience it will stress you out no end and you simply won't get the result you wanted.

By the way it is a fabulous dress!! It's actually hard enough to even find that style of dress in any shops in Ireland, they're mostly stocked with the bigger, puffy styles.
