    Where is your savings safe?
Are there other options for your savings other than under the mattres?

What "after" are you talking about? There was always and will always be a government guarantee on Bank deposit savings, all that changed was the upper limit was increased. All that will change is an upper limit might return.

Exactly. The guarantee made very little difference to the average saver. It was more for large corporate deposits and bond holders etc.

Whatever happens with the guarantee (likely some sort of phase-out), it will take place in line with the banks not requiring the guarantee.
