i recently found a insurance company that insure com jeeps as private vehicles however they dont do it for crew cabs for example the navara,l200 or hi-lux and was told that when these jeeps are insured it is in the small print that you cannot carry anyone in the rear seats unless it is to do with work i just see alot of ppl driving them around with kids and wonder do they know this?
i have also come accross a land rover defender commercial non crew cab which has fold down seats to the rear and was wonderin on the legality of insuring that privately cause it is not on log book as a crew cab but comes with the seats in the rear ?

i never heard of that before because if a vehicle is taxed comercially it must have commercial insurance which means 2 seats in a commercial jeep.
what advantage would there be of getting private insurance on a commercial jeep when you could only have 2 seats in it?
as far as crewcabs are concerned i dont know how many passengers your allowed to carry under commercial insurance.

I have a Navara and am insured by FBD (commercial policy), my policy says:

    "3. Limitations as to use:
    Use for the Insured's business.
Use while drawing trailers but not a greater number of trailers in all than is permitted by law.
Use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes.
Use while towing any one disabled mechanically propelled vehicle."

I dunno about the fold-down seats.. if they're not mentioned in section (S.1) of the vehicle registration certificate (mine says '5' for the Navara for example) then maybe they don't officially exist and people sitting in them wouldn't be covered by insurance? Something to talk to an expert about I think. :)

incorrect. tax and insurance are mutually exclusive. I have a commercial pajero insured privately.

edit: your insurance company will cover you and your passengers on a commercial jeep/crewcab if your policy covers you for social, domestic and pleasure use...however, its Customs & Excise that will have a problem if they catch you using the vehicle for private purposes or carrying private passengers (i.e. non-work related).

In fairness, if you so much as stop for a bag of chips in a van, you're using it for private purposes. The revenue have schemes for taxing private use of commercial vehicles for this reason:

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/benefit-in-kind/private-use-vans.html

As long as you're complying with that, or some other similar provision I can't see how you'd have a problem, but I'm not an expert. :)

so from whats being said here commercial insurance (atleast from fbd anyway) covers you for SD&P , so then the only thing youd have to worry about is the tax, whats the penalty for getting caught with it , i heard you have to pay back private tax on the vehicle, sounds like a lot but if you changed your vehicle every year they couldnt hit you that hard

VRT as well, depending on how you purchased it.

If it was bought as a commercial then VRT would be liable. If purchased as a passenger then only the fine/ remaining road tax would be due. Cant charge you for something twice.
