Due to some chipping on some backteeth I will need at least three crowns.
I have been searching around the dental forum for some information on where to go (may have to be NI for cost reasons) and have only found reference to crowns in conjunction with root canals.
Since the root and nerve are fine would I only need a crown?
It's just some chips around some old fillings.

Yes, you can get a crown without a RCT.

I have one tooth that has a crown and hasn't had a RTC, and am in the process of having another crowned having had an RTC.

But you'd have to speak to a dentist in person and they'd have to examine your teeth.

It doesn't matter what is wrong with you, a "telephone diagnosis" is never a good idea. Its quite possible you may not even need a crown. That can only be ascertained when you see a professional in person.

    I need crowns alright.
Those teeth where previously chipped and the dentist was already unhappy about filling them, saying they where too weak to be filled and would chip again, which they did.
I don't think the diagnosis improved since.
I am now researching the price of crowns here, in NI, Germany or even Poland or Hungary.
Of course those are very different markets with different costs and overheads, but having my salary cut but my expenses stay the same I have to shop on price.
But also taking into account what happens if something goes wrong, don't fancy several trips to Poland to carry out repairs, there is something to be said for treatment here since you don't need to book a week off if you need to go again.

Remember, when factoring the cost, you can claim 20% of the treatment cost back at the end of the year, using your Med 2 forms.

The Med 2 is valid for both the Root Canal and the Crown.

My RCT (Molar) was done by a specialist and cost €100 for the consult and €800 for the actual treatment.

My Porcelain and Gold crown is costing €1100.

Total cost €2,000. I'm assuming I'll get €400 back therefore net cost €1600.

You may find that others cost less.

    I'll say this once!!!
The lab fee is the largest expense when doing a crown for a dentist. There's a multitude of labs we can send to. They range from the plain awful to excellent. This is reflected in their fees.
If anyone wants me to match prices elsewhere i will-but there's a difference in quality which you as a patient may not be aware of.
Sounds like you should consider full-gold crowns. Excellent material-you mightn't like the appearance.Good luck

    TWO THOUSAND SMACKERS?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    FOR ONE TOOTH?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah, lemme just dip in the back of the sofa, nope, no 2 k there, ditto trouser pocket, no nothing behind the seat of the car, might have to go down the stairs into my vault where I keep the gold bars and diamonds.
And I need 3 crowns, of course everyone knows that people have a couple of grand squirrelled away that they can dip into willy nilly, say if the wife needs a new mink stole for the opera or the Aston needs a bit of an aul' overhaul or maybe another horse for the stables.
Jesus, I'm on a much reduced salary and quite obviously in the wrong racket.
I don't care why it costs so much, I don't care that Ireland is different (i.e twice as expensive as it should be) I don't care how hard it is, I don't give a crap about all the arguments, just as much as the dentist doesn't care where I get 8-10 grand from (mugging an old granny, etc...) as long as it ends up in his till, I can't afford that and the 20% you get back doesn't much change that either.
Of course I will still speak to my local dentist and see what he has to say, but if I can save the equivalent of a holiday abroad or a half decent second hand car I can be as patriotic as I want, but you can't reach into a naked man's pocket.
