Yes you do (unless you want to pay €40 for the priveledge of checking in at the airport). Online check-in is open from 15 days before your flight.

It's now actually €100 so you wouldn't want to forget!

It is also a good idea to do it early. Ryanair are now admitting to overbooking and anyone with a sequence number of 190 or more on their boarding pass might be bumped off the flight... so better check in early, verify your number is lower than 190 and be happy.

What about the return leg of the journey? Can you only check in for it after you've flown on the outbound leg of the journey?

I'm just wondering how it works if you fly somewhere and then don't have access to a computer to check-in online and print out the boarding passes for the return leg.

For reference, a return flight with Ryanair is actually two one-way flights. For each of these, the check-in window opens 15 days before departure and closes 4 hours before it. You can check in for both flights together if you are within the check-in window for both. Or you can do the outbound flight first and the return flight later, when check-in for it has opened. The system is very flexible like that.
