    Hi All

Could anyone recommend a good Diagnostic Fault Code Reader that can be used through the OBD port?

It will be used mostly for VAG cars but one that could do others makes would be great :)

If ye know of any for sale or recommend the best one to go for it would be great.

Sealey would probably have be the best for the money - http://www.sealey.co.uk/PLPageBuilder.asp?pageindex=1&gotonode=DoProductSearch&method=mProductSearch&IndividualTypeID=&productdescription=&fulltextsearch=code+reader&category=0&requiredresults=10&cmdGo=Go%21

There's probably a lot of generic branded code readers for VAG cars, try you local motor factors to see if they have anything.

There are many hacked vagcom cables for sale on ebay etc. While many of them are practically worthless, Ive seen one in action first hand that was bought for €60 & it works on the latest audis. It seems to do all the coding, live data reading, system test, service position for electronic rear brakes etc. Everything that you would need as well as detailed fault code reading, service reset etc. It also has generic obdII function which will do more basic fault reading on a range of manufacturer cars. This one was a VAG 908.

I would recommend the Actron Diagnostic Tool. Got one from stylintrucks and it works well in diagnosing my systems.

Just seen this post, if anyone gets offered a Delphi Diesel Diagnostic tool, can you let me know. The job got broken into the other weekend and some hand held devices and software were taken. The licences are up for renewal soon so they will stop working. Don't get caught paying a handful of cash for something that will stop working. When the license expires, it can only be renewed through ourselves so the tool is worthless, after a while, to anyone.

    Cheers

Personally ive never liked the standalone handheld ones. I like the idea of having a laptop to make notes on and log data if you need to. Something like a Panasonic CF-27 is perfect and they cost buttons on eBay.

If its for VAG cars, you want a VAG-COM or clone. This will allow you to go well beyond the generic OBD II measuring blocks and functions.

If you want to do other cars, you can get a generic OBD scanner, ELM is a popular one over here, not sure if its sold in ireland.
