    :)

    Hi All

I am new to swimming, im in my 30's and am just learning how to swim,
I have been using a float to hold on to and kicking my legs, this is fine,

my problem is when i put my head above the water, to get some air and
then back down in the water again I loose all forward movement , why is
    this ?

Also for some strange reason when im kicking I dont always go in a
straight line, some times i move to the left, are these 2 faults common
when folks are learning how to swim ?

    Any advice would be great

    Thanks
    :)

This is a common problem for most people when starting. If when you're lifting your head to breath and you lift it too high or forward your legs are going to drop and this kills all the speed you've built up. So when breathing you must turn your head to the side. This keeps your body flat on the surface and reduces the frontal resistance.

This could be due to a number of things. The two most common would be you're either kicking more effectively with your right leg compared to your left or your profile in the water isn't right. Make sure your hips are level and near the surface and that you're kicking evenly and the same depth with both legs.

Hopefully this is of some help. If you're still learning and have classes, ask your teacher to have a look and see what the issue is.

If you are using a kick board, breath to the side as already posted.

If you are kicking front crawl, then you can add in one arm stroke on the same side as you will breath. The head turning and the arm stroke should work together in harmony. The arm stroke will start just before your head starts to turn to that side.

If it goes well for you try and rotate sides every second time you need a breath.
