List of the 53 links courses in Ireland

Reading Liam Kelly in the Indo where he mentioned that 53 of the 151 links courses in the world are here. Does anyone have a link to a list or ideally a map of these? I tried googling but only get links to travel agents, thanks.

The trouble we have here is when does a course cease to be called a links? And which ones have been included or excluded?

However, 53 is about the right number for Ireland. You should be able to write them down if you work your way around the country. It's easier than the 50 States anyway.

You can do a search on the GUI site for course type - but the links courses search shows up 70 something courses.

Obviously some of these clubs don't know where or what they are! But a good starting point for you.

You also have to consider those clubs with two courses.

Royal Portrush has the Valley and the Dunluce... Ballyliffen the Old and Glashedy.... Rosapenna has 45 holes, Portmarnock 27... etc...

Does Ardglass count with some holes with links characteristics and some holes with very much parkland characteristics?

    It is somewhat arbitrary.

What defines a links course is a question that stumps many. What defines one for you?

Thanks, I had already made out a list last week, when the OH insisted on having Grey's bl**dy Anatomy on the box. I could only think of 34, so if anyone knows of other genuine links, let me know.
This could turn into one of those "50 courses to play before you die" sort of things. ;)

Well to start, you have excluded the whole of the North, all of which are included in the 53 courses referred to by Malcolm Campbell (subsequently reported by Liam Fey)...

But having a quick scan at your list, others you have missed include Spanish Point, possibly Bundoran (depending on definition), Lahinch Castle course and North-West...

Ceann Sibeal is a "links like" course it is not a "true links"

That's an interesting choice... Dingle is a true links in every sense of the word... I would have thought there were much more obvious choices that fall between two "types" of course...

Bundoran is definitely a links. Cruit Island and Gweedore are also links courses in Donegal, although both are 9 hole

Bundoran is more of a cliff-top course which is lacking in links qualities in certain areas... Cruit Island is the same... But I won't argue against either being included on the list

    Mike,

Unfortunately the GUI list relied on clubs themselves to designate their "type" and has a number of obvious errors.

Unless we call all courses "links" which once upon a time was the case.

That list still has some errors...

    The following shouldn't be included:

    Donaghadee
    Carnalea
    Skellig Bay
    Fermoy
    Galway Bay

Mourne is a golf club that plays over the 2nd course at County Down... Rathmore plays over the Valley course at Royal Portrush.

The fellow who posted the 34 courses earlier was on the right track... add the ones I mentioned (plus Strandhill) and then those from the North... Then argue over where you should include both courses... That should fall out about the early 50's mark which will be approximately the ones they were considering when they pulled the number "53" out of the hat...

Dont know if I would describe Greenore as Links course. There is a hint of Links about it but its more Parkland I would have thought

    Same for Castlemartyr

    Greenore is not a links...

Castlemartyr is about as far away from a links as I can imagine... An awful looking golf course.

As I said before though, Ceann Sibheal is very much a links course.

Donaghadee jumps out straight away from that list. While it's beside the sea, it's not a links...more of a heathland course.

Not sure how you wouldn't describe Ceann Sibeal as a "true links"?
