    ..do you think ?

After a trip to the factory and museum again last year, it got me to thinking.....my dad's old '63 Fintailed W111 220SEb......we've had it so long, the factory resto would be a great place to have it done..........it couldn't be that dear, surely. And even if over the odds, it'd still be worth it for the sentimental value the car has to me........

So, I dropped them an email, gave them the details, on 19th February and they came back to me by email.....on 17th May......good job I wasn't stuck on the hard shoulder waiting for a tow..........

The car is fundamentally sound, 120k miles, zero bore wear (I measured it) still on original paint, has a few bubble on offside wing (near battery tray), needs 2 x cills, needs a new exhaust.......other than that sfa, as they say, but naturally you'd let them go through the whole thing........

So, a poll would give it away, so what you have to do is, guess the answers to a) and b), below.

    a) How much to do a ground-up resto
    b) How long to do it

    Knock yourselves out........

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I once met a guy here in Dublin who has a 300SL Gullwing. He had it rebuilt by Mercedes in the factory. They gave him a folder with photos of the restoration etc. I can't remember the exact bill, but it was astronomical. This was back in 2001 or so & think the job cost almost £200,000. This was a complete rebuild, the car was pretty much exactly as new. If they quoted you for a total rebuild like this, given the lower value of your car, I'd guess €175,000 and 2 years.

I have to say, though, if I won the Lotto I'd do it.

I didn't get anything that fancy......I got this, in an email......

    Dear Mr xxxx,

thank you for your interest in the service and restoration of your above mentioned car.

We would like to inform you that a restoration only could be done in our factory and would come up to approx. 160.000 €. This depends on the condition of your car. The time schedule would take about 24 months.

Please take into consideration that this project would cost much more than the current market value of this type of car.

We hope that we have helped you with this information. For any further details please contact.......

Send them a few pics, as you say the car is basically sound, and they might come down considerably from 160 k.
This sounds like a standard response to filter out enquiries.
It's worth one more email for the laugh(and for classic boardsies), ask them for sample/links to their work.

I was pretty close then!!! At least they were good enough to point out it would be more than the value of the car, just in case you dropped the 160K before realising!!

Mark Cosovich is his name. I think he offers a factory warranty on the resto's he does. He usually comes over for the Terenure show, with a van load of parts/books etc. If you need anything specific, he'll bring it over for you.
