I was wondering, what is the criteria for a horse to be allowed to run in the derby ? Apart from being a 3 year old and a thoroughbred.

Is there a race entry fee ?

Can Aiden O'Brien enter as many horses as he wants ?

What if there are more entrants than places, i.e. what if 50 horses applied to run, which horses would be turned away ?

Not an expert as I've never owned a horse, let alone one good enough potentially for a Derby entry!!

I think the first entry stage is when horses are either yearlings or two year olds. There is an entry fee but I don't know how much

At certain times in the run up to the race connections have to pay a further fee to stay in the race (each 'stage' is called a 'Confirmation stage'). The owner has the option of removing his horse (and forfeiting any fees paid up to then) or paying an additional fee to remain in

If a horse has not been entered at the original stage he can still be entered subsequently, (called supplementing) but must pay a large fee. I think there is a stage somewhere the year before where you can pay ST£8k and then in the weeks before the race the final supplementary stage costs approx ST£75k

If on the day more horses are declared than can run there is a balloting system to see who gets a run. I assume preference is given to the highest rated horses

Open to correction on the above if anyone can offer further advice :D

Yearlings is the first entry stage. I think it's around £500.

    I hope this helps.
Normally the cost is the entry fee + declaration fee, 1% of the total value of race (1st place + 2nd Place etc)

So for the 47-60 rated handicap in naas (23/june) which is valued @ €7,000 the entry fee would be €56 and after the entries come out if you still wanted to run the declaration fee would be €14 (€70 total)

The attached file has the details of the derby
    :D:D:D

Thats the Irish Derby. I think the Epsom one is different. Yearling stage is the first entry opportunity afik.
