After the exhibition of The End, it was confirmed by the producers that his name was Samuel.

Kind of proves why I'm glad the producers didn't go out of their way to mention it - it's only an anti-climax. Mystery is solved, anyway, but doesn't make any difference to the show one way or the other!

As I posted on the other thread, we kinda knew about this since season 5, as that was the name they used in the casting call for Titus Welliver. It was a very well chosen name. Here's what Wikipedia says:
Samael (Hebrew: סמאל‎) (also Sammael) is an important archangel in Talmudic and post-Talmudic lore, a figure who is accuser, seducer and destroyer, and has been regarded as both good and evil. It is said that he was the guardian angel of Esau and a patron of the empire of Rome.
Also called Sammael and Samil, he is considered in legend both a member of the heavenly host (with often grim and destructive duties) and a fallen angel, equatable with Satan and the chief of the evil spirits. One of Samael's greatest roles in Jewish lore is that of the angel of death. In this capacity he is a fallen angel but nevertheless remains one of the Lord's servants. As a good angel, Samael supposedly resides in the seventh heaven, although he is declared to be the chief angel of the fifth heaven.

But I agree, they were wise to leave him unnamed in Across the Sea. That episode had such an enormous demystifying effect on the whole story, arguably not for the better. I get the feeling they realised this and were trying to back up a bit. I'm happy with him just being the Man in Black.

True, but hopefully we can stop with the cringey AltLocke/Flocke stuff. Those nicknames were the only reason I was hoping he would be named!

True, but I always liked UnLocke ;)

Man In Black is so much more sinister than anything though.

I wish I had known his name earlier as I never knew what to call him. It felt ridiculous using most of his nicknames. Man In Black made him sound like Johnny Cash and Flocke made him sound like a web browser.

It's a good name, but it's no Cecil.

Cool name, anyway - at least that ;)

They should have just used the actors real name. Titus Welliver is a better name than anything the writers could possibly have come up with.

Trent would have an acceptable name for me

interesting to note; although since LOST went out of it's way not to name him in the series, u feel that the bigwigs just wanted fans to stop asking.

I do like the nickname unLocke. Man is Black is also the name of a kitchy prance "rap" about the Undertaker from way back when....also Cash, as mentioned.

I dont get the problem with us not knowing his name? 'Evil has many names' or some such crap.

I don't think his name was that big a deal. I'm sure they had every intention of naming him, but when his and Jacob's episode came they just decided to have a bit of fun with it. I certainly enjoyed the way they managed to refer to him many times throughout without once mentioning his name. In fact, just before about half way through I was hoping they wouldn't mention it a continue to avoid it in what was quite a comical way :)

Do you think they revealed too much?

    Good old Sammy

I thought he just didn't have a name. Why would he ever need one when there's only two other people in his whole world?

At the start of that episode I thought that since the mother only picked one name, she'd leave the other un-named, and he wouldn't be treated as well as Jacob throughout his life, which would build up his resentment and make him hate people.

    That would've been much cooler!

Claimed by Kristin Dos Santos to be the Man in Black's real name (once the series had ended), but still officially unconfirmed

That is based on the casting call. Other casting calls for him have the name Esau. (which would fit in with the religious undertone of the show better too. I bible Esau was Jacob's brother)

What would have been really cool is if he was called Sue like in the song A Boy Called Sue by the original Man In Black, Johnny Cash. This would explain why he was so angry at the world.

No, he was only ever Samuel in the casting calls. Only the fans called him Esau.

Kristin may well be mistaken, but she did say Samuel was the actual name used in the script for Across the Sea.

It doesn't really matter either way tbh. Whatever his name was it wasn't revealed in the show, so he will always be MIB to me.

I always considered him to be Esau, and I was always waiting for that to be revealed!
