Turntable...Where to get one?

Just for the record (no pun intended), I am not looking for a USB "lets back up my Vinyl as MP3s" job. I am looking for a vinyl/record player that I can connect up to an existing hi-fi system via stereo Phono leads. I have a ton of old vinyl kept in great nick that are just sitting there. They will never be sold, and I want to listen to them again.

So where these days can you get a player as described above. My budget would be about €150 - 200 (but cheaper is better, unless it's utter muck). I'm based in Galway City, but would travel if there was value to be had. I had a look on Richersounds and that looks very expensive. There is a perfectly adequate Sony Hifi in the house, and I remember seeing a Sony turntable for about €129 (if memory serves) not that long ago. Surely it's possibly to purchase in that price range.

    No?

    Hi there !

Turntables are a magic art so it really depends on the level of quality you seek !

Peats do a few ranging in price from €99 to €299. The cheaper ones are USB of the type you specify you don't want.

There's one for €159 that has a USB output but also line level phono connectors. It has the pre-amplifier/equaliser built in so not much scope for experimenting with quality pre-amps - though as I said it depends on the quality you're after.

They also have a NAD turntable at €299 which would use the phono input of your amp - might be more that you're willing to spend but at least it would be of decent quality and you could probably spend a few extra bob on a decent cartridge/stylus if became necessary ?

Here's the relevant page on their website : http://www.peats.com/cgi-bin/catalog.cgi?view_subcat=1&id=5564&sid=23&cid=4199

    Good luck !

    Ken

Either ALDI or LIDL are about to sell one for €49. The qualityu from these things is pretty bad but then that would be my opinion of MP3s too so don't mind me! Try to keep the quality as high as possible and don't be tempted to mess about too much with whatever software you use - audacity is free and very good.

The smart thing to do is buy the best 'proper' turntable you can and connect it up to an existing amp. Vinyl is far more musical than CD if not handier.
