looking for opinions for this lens considering one for my d40. have the 18:55 kit and the 55:200vr so think this would be good addition. any advice or samples of photos taken with one appreciated.

I have one, and I absolutely love it! I call it my "party lens", because of its low light capabilities, I bought mine a year ago, and never regretted it, go for it.

Flickr's 'most interesting' with 35mm, 1.8 & Nikon tags are these. You might have to check into the 'more info' data (right of the photo-page, itself) just to make sure it was a 35mm (should say focal length 35mm). But I've heard great things about it.

With a D40 though, it won't be 35mm - it'll be cropped because the sensor isn't full frame. See here. If you're only starting out it makes little difference (did to me and my 50mm anyway) so I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you.

Enjoy it anyway - Prime lenses are ridiculous amounts of fun.

Actually .... it is and always will be a 35mm focal length lens. That does not vary. It is also a DX lens, so made for Cropped Sensor Bodies as opposed to Full Frame. On the D40 it will be a Normal Lens and would be very useful, sharp & fast.
