Toothache 10 weeks after filling replaced...

10 weeks ago I had a large amalgam filling (lower molar) replaced. Unfortunately it was a bit of a disaster as the dentist left a sharp edge on one side (next to the tooth in front) which was then ground/filed down. But instead of removing the sharp edge, it was just brought down further and further to a lower level, sharp edge intact! This also left a gap between the filling and the adjacent tooth. (floss was not "clicking" but running through smoothly) As I wasn't happy with the treatment or the results (from junior dentist in the practice) I was seen by the senior dentist whose practice it is. He said that although it was a lovely filling(??) he wasnt happpy with the gap so would replace it. He did!

But now 10 weeks later and it is giving me a bit of trouble. A niggle on and off for the last week and now it seems to be getting worse by the hour. It's now aching and feels a bit hot too so I imagine there is something not right there!

Just wondering what could have caused this? It has been heavily filled for over 10 years and never a problem. I know it's not great to be carrying out so much excavation on a heavily filled tooth so could that be the cause of my toothache now? Or is there somethiing wrong with the filling? I thought it odd at the time that he used his finger to put the amalgam into the cavaty, isn't it usually put in with an instrument??

Anyway, any advice or insight appreciated! :)

Well from my experience, I got a large filling done and we'll say within 6 months I was in agony with same tooth. Went back to dentist and was an abscess and had to get the tooth pulled. Think it was the large filling on the nerve aggrevated it. But fact that you have yours in for 10 years if it was an abscess then it would have played up by now. Best of luck with it coz after two pulled and a root canal, i feel your pain.

Aw thanks! :) I've been through the wars myself. Already had a root canal job and 2 extractions - I don't want onother one, I'm running out of teeth!

Anyway, I hope I'm not brewing an abscess. Oh god, I probably am.

OMG, it must be me, is it?! :( 3 dentists, 3 refunds for 3 bad crowns, TMJ problems, 2 fillings, , over 25 visits and I'm actually worse off than I was a year ago when I decided to bite the bullet and get 2 crumbling teeth fixed. (why isn't there weeping smiley for me to use?!)

Seriously though, why would I have this toothache 10 weeks after having the filling replaced? And what's with the bunging in the amalgam by hand rather than using a tool??

Nah...a big filling is often deep in the tooth and close to the nerve, sometimes the nerve can react badly and cause pain. Sometimes it will go away with time and sometimes it will not and requires more treatment like a root canal. It impossible to call from here. But knowing your luck...........

    Thanks for that fitzgeme! :)

I can understand why that could happen soon after the work was done..... but 10 weeks later???

It seems to have settled down a bit now but will have to find yet another dentist and get it checked out anyway.
