Will it matter if i study the previous edition of the book for it rather than the current one ? Obviously a few questions will be different but will it matter that much ?

Just get yourself the new CD-ROM and keep doing practice tests until you can pass every time. It took me around four days to pass 10 tests in a row.

Don't bother buying the book. 90% of the questions are borderline retarded and common sensical, e.g.

You are driving along a street and notice some children playing on the road ahead. SHould you:

    a. Blare the horn and speed up to scare them off
    b. Try to mow them down grand theft auto style
    c. Call the police
    d. Slow down, stop if necessary, and exercise extreme caution

You have to wade through a sea of this crap to get the questions of substance - the ones that might actually trip you up in the test

    Yes, that's my point.

Are we being tested on our patience to wade through the millions of "gimme" questions to get to the few questions that actually contain substantive information?

It'd be handy if the book was split in two:

Section 1: Questions you need to learn the answers to.
Section 2: Questions you can answer if you were born with a semi-functional brain.

Do you live under a bridge, reading the 1st edition of the Rules of the Road?

Ruh roh, looks like we've had a miscommunication. I'm refererring to the official theory book - as I thought I made clear with my example question.

here's a better idea for studying...

why not go out for a good long walk and look at all the road signs and markings on your adventure and see can you identify them all aswell as hazards and so on.

Did the test twice. Failed first time. Found the CD so hard to study with. The main problem is wading through the simple questions to find the ones that can and did fail me.
When I prepared for it the next time I mainly used the rules of the road book which has most things explained in it without the annoying question format. I then looked at the hard sections on the CD and did a few practice tests. Got everything right the next time .;)
You should be ok with the old version but look at the Rules of the Road book too. Good Luck.
