Ahhh I'm sorry call me a conspiracy nut if you want but I am calling bullsh1t on this "accident" of mixing up methadone and mephedrone. Smells too disgustingly familiar to the time the original clinical trials that created the terror of XTC in the hearts of the American public "accidently" tested methamphetamine instead of MDMA.

I'm not surprised. A load of unfounded mouthpieces get their way again with medical facts dismissed etc. Not a fan of the shops or what hey sell as sleepng can be v difficult at times but seriously, what a joke.

There's actually about 7 cases where BEFORE AN AUTOPSY WAS PERFORMED the tabloids ran rampant. Things like strep throat, pneumonia, SAD syndrome.

IIRC there was one family who had to move afterward when their teenage daughter died of congenital heart failure and the tabloids ran rampant with it. Things like ''Druggies Out'' sprayed on their car by the ''concerned parents'' of the community.

Apparently California is moving towards legalising and taxing cannabis, and the US government has given up the 'war on drugs'. I'll get links in a minute.

[rant] When something like this happens once, it can be taken as an accident. When it happens three or four times it can be taken as an unlikely coincidence of accidents and mistakes. But when it happens over and over again for decade after decade after decade you have to call it what it is: A deliberate and concerted campaign of misinformation designed to re-ignite the oil fire of deliberately induced media and "won't someone think of the children" public hysteria.[/rant]

But the UK government effectively incited the whole thing

When a drugs law is passed in the UK, obviously they've tried to separate politicians from the process to avoid the right-wingers needlessly incriminating people to appeal to the alarmists and keep their seats.

Because of this there's an independent board which acts as the final veto in these matters known as the ACMD. It's a statutory and non-executive non-departmental British public body, which was established under the UK's Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

    Their specific remit is
to keep under review the situation in the United Kingdom with respect to drugs which are being or appear to them likely to be misused and of which the misuse is having or appears to them capable of having harmful effects sufficient to constitute a social problem, and to give to any one or more of the Ministers, where either Council consider it expedient to do so or they are consulted by the Minister or Ministers in question, advice on measures (whether or not involving alteration of the law) which in the opinion of the Council ought to be taken for preventing the misuse of such drugs or dealing with social problems connected with their misuse, and in particular on measures which in the opinion of the Council, ought to be taken

The ACMD is required to have at least 20 members, among them representatives of the practices of medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy, the pharmaceutical industry, and chemistry (other than pharmaceutical chemistry); and members who have a wide and relevant experience of social problems connected with the misuse of drugs. Membership currently stands at 21. All members are unpaid, although expenses are reimbursed.

In February 2009, the government was accused by Professor Nutt (funny name but the HEAD of the board) of making a political decision with regard to drug classification in rejecting the scientific advice to downgrade ecstasy from a class A drug. The ACMD report on ecstasy, based on a 12-month study of 4,000 academic papers, concluded that it is not as dangerous as other class A drugs such as heroin and cocaine, and should be downgraded to class B. The advice was not followed.

Jacqui Smith, then Home Secretary, was also widely criticised by the scientific community for bullying Professor David Nutt into apologising for his comments that, in the course of a normal year, more people die from falling off horses than from taking ecstasy (true fact btw).

Professor Nutt was sacked by Jacqui Smith's successor as Home Secretary Alan Johnson; Johnson saying "It is important that the government's messages on drugs are clear and as an advisor you do nothing to undermine public understanding of them. I cannot have public confusion between scientific advice and policy and have therefore lost confidence in your ability to advise me as Chair of the ACMD.''

You couldn't actually make this **** up
