Delays on Belfast-Dublin line

8.00am from Droghda to Bray delayed outside Balbriggan. Waiting along the line we were told that it was a signal failure, but passengers onboard were told that there was subsidence on the line. A train northbound did a u-turn at Balbriggan and went back to Dublin. No word on those stuck outside Balbriggan.

Could we be looking at another Malahide viaduct-type fiasco?

IE are saying it was signal failure but according to passengers on some trains announcments were made saying there were structural issues.

Twitters from Irish Rail 10 mins ago -
Due to a track fault at Balbriggan some northbound northern Commuter services are operating up to 40mins late
Correction: some southbound northern Commuter services and Belfast Enterprise services are delayed due to track fault

"A train northbound did a u-turn at Balbriggan and went back to Dublin."

Really? I wish I'd been there to see it!

Well to be fair Irish rail haven't covered themselves in glory with the whole Viaduct episode. I'd be a bit skeptical of anything they say wrt safety these days.

Whatever happened on the report to see why we narrowly avoided a huge catrastrophe 8 months ago. Term whitewash comes to mind the terms accountability, responsibilty and you've been fired cos you didn't do your job right don't.

I'd say it would hve been more a three point turn than U'turn though. I believe the turning circle is quite big on trains these days, but then I'm no expert!

The Railway Safety Commission are the body responsible for investigating and publishing the report on the Malahide viaduct; www.rsc.ie is their website to view when it is released; I'd give it till at least Spring 2011 before it is made public. The Irish Rail report that was referred to in the media is an internal report.
