The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang

I've listening to it right now. Seems to be more of the same following on from The '59 Sound (possibly one of my favourite albums of all time) which on one hand is obviously brilliant, but given that Brian Fallon said we should expect something a bit different, kinda quells any excitement I had. Despite that, it's still a great sounding album (from the first 3 songs anyway, especially Bring It On).

    Any other fans out there?

Im liking it so far just listening to it now not as good as 59 but could be a real grower. There is a difference prob about the same as the difference between sink or swim and 59. they seem to be a band that are heavily influenced by the 50's so its never going to leave their sound

Cracking album, need to check out their debut.

Oooh, didn't realise this was out so soon. Like the OP, The '59 Sound is definitely one of my favourite albums ever, if this turns out to be half as good as that then I'll be satisfied.

Had a listen to the two new songs on their myspace there, pretty good stuff. Wasn't totally blown away by the '59 Sound, but definitely some fun, nostalgic rock songs on there. Will check out American Slang at some point!

It's a solid effort but not a patch on the two previous offerings for me.

Definitely a grower! The same way 59 and Sink or Swim was for me.

Got tickets for them in Birmingham in two weeks, Should be good

Given it two listen-throughs so far and I can safely say that it is no '59 Sound. I think it will grow on me a bit but you can't compare it with The '59 Sound. Shame really.

Is it out? I'm a new fan, the only thing I didn't really like about 59 Sound was the vocal sound, which got a bit grating after a while. But I've heard American Slang (the song) and that echo / double track effect isn't there. So if its the same for the rest of the album, that's a good thing!

Looking forward to getting it - first album I've looked forward to getting all year so far.

Have been listening to this for the last few weeks and like most people I didnt like it at first but it really does grow on you. Not as good as Sink or Swim for me but a really strong album which could bring them to the attention of a lot more people. "When we were young" is an amazing track and sounds like nothing they have done before. Only drawbacks are that it is so short, although 10 tracks seems to be becoming the norm now and I really dont like the opening line at the start of "Boxer". It just doesnt fit.

A real shame that they are not playing over here, had my fingers crossed they would be announced as Green Days support next week but that wont happen just hope when they are back in the UK in November they venture over here.

i just got a reply on facebook to a comment i left (basically lamenting the lack of an irish visit), stating that they'll be in Ireland "soon enough, give us a few weeks" - that has me happy, you heard it here first! . . .if you didn't see the facebook bit

the album is a real grower, didn't like at all with the first couple of play-throughs but it's all good now - no '59 sound though i feel but maybe time will change my mind

Have listened through a few times now, it's fun but very similar to their last album. Would go see them live if they come over though, say it would be a fun gig.

Dates slowly filtering through now for gigs on thier facebook page. Bristol, Wolverhampton, Southampton, Germany all mentioned. No Ireland yet :(:(

It would be very difficult for them to repeat the quality of the '59 Sound but having said that, American Slang is another great album IMO.

More of a grower than the '59 Sound but well worth sticking with.

Thanks for that, probably going to head to this and the Belfast gig. Been waiting a long time to see them again.

Nice! Any news on tickets? Must give American Slang more of a go now that I know there's a gig on the way.

Nice one, wouldn't mind seeing them live. I gave American Slang a few spins and it's a pretty solid album, it hasn't quite grown on me yet though like the way The '59 Sound and Sink or Swim did but with a few more listens i'm sure it'll sound better and better.

It is a grower, just really lacks a few up tempo songs along the lines of "We're getting a divorce..." or " Meet me by the rivers edge" for me for it to be on par with the earlier stuff.

It didn't grip me on the first listen, but having listened to it a good few times I really like it now.
But I still prefer The 59 Sound.

Thanks for telling us about the gig. Last time I trust ticketmaster to e-mail me about my preferred bands, heard nothing from them. Would have been so pissed if this flew under my radar! Cant wait for this.

For all you Gaslight Anthem fans, you might like a young band out of Chicago called AM Taxi.

I LOVE this band, absolutely adore them! I saw them at Oxegen last year, and one of the funnest acts I saw at Oxegen. I had been listening to their album running up to Oxe & I loved them anyway, but seeing them live really cemented that love! The front man always looks like he's having the craic & their songs stick with you. Haven't heard the new album yet but I'm looking forward to getting it. Going to see them in the Olympia in Nov:D

Anyone here like The Gaslight Anthem?

Their albums The '59 Sound and American Slang are amazing but i haven't gotten around to getting their first album yet. Can't wait to see them in the Olympia in November.

Haven't got around to getting the album yet but from what I've heard of it I like it, although I would have to agree with what a few others have said, it is very similar soundwise to "The '59 Sound"
I am loving the song "She Loves You", I don't think it's on the album but it was released as an iTunes bonus track, I heard it on an ad on TG4 a few weeks ago and I've been listening to it on repeat since then :)

    Absolutely love them!

Love the 59 Sound and American Slang. Got 59 Sound at start of this year and taught it was so good got their first album Sink or Swim and its amazing. I keep changing my mind on which is my favourite album which is a good thing. They also have an EP called Senor and the Queen with four songs. Look uo Blue Jeans and White T Shirts and also Say I Wont Recognise they are amazing songs.

If theres one thing better than listening to them its watching live vids of them. They really put on killer shows. Would love to be heading to the Olympia but think I will be abroad so gutted. Will prob see them one day but by that time everyone will prob love them.

I love them too! Can't wait to see them in November. My favourite song of theirs is Stay Lucky. You know you're onto a good thing when you remember where you were when you first heard them. Glorious. ;)

Did Brian do any acoustic songs? And was there any Chuck/Brian duets?

    Thanks!

Seems like a class gig, although I think the Southampton gig got a better setlist. Heading to both Dublin and Belfast gigs so hopefully they vary up the setlist...can't wait.

Just to let anyone heading to the Belfast gig know the venue has been chaged from the University.

Just seen a few new acoustic songs on Youtube. These are really good and the setting looks cool. My favourite is We did when we were young. It's my least favourite song on American Slang but this version is amazing. The American Slang version isn't a patch on the Sirius radio acoustic version but still good

We Did it When We Were Young

    American Slang

    Old White Lincoln

    The Spirit of Jazz

I have a Gaslight Anthem acoustic bootleg in which 2 girls are screaming for him to play 'We did it when we were young' and he refuses saying it will sound terrible...and now I gotta agree with him. Absolutely love the album version but think this just strips all the emotion out of it. Enjoyed the other ones though...aint heard many acoustic versions of 'Old white lincoln'.

Having heard this live i have to disagree. It's the kind of song that if broken out at the right time at the right gig can transform it from good to great. At hammersmith they played it after great expectations/59 sound and the atmosphere was insane. It was somehow loud and quiet at the same time and the crowd were on point with the clap/chorus. As i said though depends on the gig/crowd. I think it would have been magic in dublin but it would have failed miserably in belfast and you definitely couldn't play it at a festival.

EDIT. Gonna throw the version from the awesome hammersmith bootleg on youtube.

    Edit 2. voila

Oh ya I know the version from the bootleg you're on about. I seen the video on Youtube from the bar in New Jersey. Some awesome songs but those 2 girls ruin it. They just keep shouting.

I actually don't like the album version as much as other songs but love this acoustic version and also the live version from Hammersmith.

Ya Old White Lincoln sounds good acoustic. I love the version below. The camera is extremely dodgy and the sound not good but I love the Glasvegas reference he throws in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,398 ✭✭✭✭Turtyturd

I think with the song itself it is an age thing, I am late twenty's and really can relate to it...while my younger brother thinks it is one of the weakest tracks on American Slang.

@ Hynsie ...Great vid, See I really like that version and it works in the live setting with crowd participation but acoustic on his own it just lacks the emotion. Dunno if it would have worked in Dublin though...most people were lost apart from the 59 sound and Backseats.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,919 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

I think the album version is absolutely brilliant with a lot of emotion but most of that seems to be lost when it's stripped down. I'm normally a massive fan of acoustic version (American Slang itself is superb) but not in this case.
