Midi Question: Transmitting Control Change (CC) messages.

    Any help appreciated.

    How do I do it?
I need to transmit a control change message (cc#81) to a loop pedal which will turn on and off a recorded loop. I have midi cable hooked up to it but can't figure out how to transmit the cc#81 data.

Is it a certain note on the keyboard? I am truly lost. Any pointers much appreciated.

What kind of keyboard have you got? CC messages are usually from rotaries or sliders. So if you just have the piano keys, you might be in a spot of bother.

An alternative is to have it connected to a PC/Laptop and send the MIDI data through software.

    Thanks.

I have an RC50 loop pedal which (as far as I can gather) has a jack input for cc#81 (I think) so I might not be able to operate it through midi(?)

It also has a midi in and out which I've connected to my laptop via a M-Audio USB Midi sport device (basically a midi in and out also).

What I wanted to do is turn on and off 3 samples (saved in the RC50) using midi (through cc#81). The program I'm using is Reason/Record, which I'm starting to think doesn't send out midi messages.

Can you recommend any software for sending midi messages or point to any tutorials? As you can probably tell, I'm a bit out of my depth here. Any help appreciated.

You need some way to send that to the unit.

If you were playing with a backing track on a daw or sequencer you could have a regular midi track with that info on it and the unit would trigger each time you wanted.

Alternatively you could program a button on a controller to output said Midi info .

Depends how you're working and what gear you have.

Does your keyboard have some sort of "CC select" option. I have a Roland PC 180. This allows you to change CC by hitting the "MIDI/select" button (to the left of the keys) and then hitting the actual keys in a particular sequence... The keys have sort of a second function when in the MIDI/select mode and above each key (on the plastic cover) there is text to say what that function is. Is there something similar on yours? Also are you sure it can send MIDI information, if it is very basic it may not be able to ... like my spare MIDI keyboard.

I think you are right about Reason. The automation it sends out seems specific to it's own synths and I don't see a way of creating a simple midi track with the control data you are after. Maybe someone else can recommend a sequencer for you (I've only used Cubase and old DOS sequencers). Don't forget your pedal will probably need to be configured to listen for the commands. Good luck anyway.

Yeah I know Reason definately does not send midi, only receives so its probably the same with Record.
