My landrover defender failed the D.O.E on a few things yesterday worn wiper linkage, worn track rod ends and a worn bush under the left hand side rear damper. I tried to replace the bush this evening but I cannot take the bottom nut off the damper (shock) the whole thing twists, even holding the very end of it with a vice grips it has only rounded it. I want to use the damper again so if I hold it with a stilsons or a large vice gripes could I destroy it? or has anyony one a better idea ? Thanks for any help.

When the shock starts to turn it can be very hard to get the nut off without wrecking it.

These normally only need tightening as they are the flat pancake type bushes aren't they?

Best course of action is to wrap a filter strap around the shock and use that to hold it and if you can apply some heat to the nut it would help.

Other than that it might be wallet out time I'm afraid

I'll try the filter strap tommorow, if I can get one all I have is the big filter pliers and I'v tried them with an old rag around the shock put I can't stop the lot twisting. My wallet is allready out compleatly out :)

I have a sykes pickavant water pump pliers. It is very very handy for stuff like that.

Something like that but don't get the sealey one, it is useless. The bottom jaw is curved the wrong way and slips off everything

Looks like your are right Slidey, I have tried with a filter strap connected to a scaffold pole and a 19 mm ring spanner also connected to a scaffold pole one on top the other on the bottom put the strap slips eventually,so I either cut it off or destroy it with anyway with a stilsons.
Sickened now to have two buy to shocks when all that failed was a bush that cost 1.30 euro.:(

If you know anyone with oxy/act plant get them to heat the nut. It will sail off then

Had the end snap off a 3 yo shock just trying to undo it. Console yourself that with the state of our roads the shocks were probably tired anyway ;)
Got some expensive Aussie shocks on mine, be interesting to see how they survive here

Any idea what I'd pay here for genuine part shocks at the main stealers ? I see them for £9.50 each at Paddocks but thats britpart .

Paddocks and others also do genuine, stick a G after the part number. I also order from LR Direct and LR Series and get good service. OEM stuff is Armstrong, call the dealer, you may be surprised on run of the mill stuff, if not you can tell them to poke it. You'll sometimes find Britpart can be the same as OEM, just re-labelled, even more so with Bearmach. Worth a punt at your local commercial vehicle motor factor as well.

I'v tried that and all but the shock still twists. Thats the problem not the nut, I dont want to damage the shock.

Try a chain wrench. I got expensive variable shockers off a vehicle using such a tool. It has a chain and a vice grip that grips the shock very well indeed. Got mine in Ted Johnsons. Very useful.

    Both made by Vise-Grip.

Ok I'll buy a set tommorow and see how they go. Between 130 and 150 for the two shocks over the counter here . I can never have enough tools anyway:)

That's a rip off for two standard shocks alright.

I got it off this morning and replaced the two bottom bushes but the old ones are fine. The shock is the problem for sure even though it says on the DOE report (reason-mounting bracket or bushes missing or loose or damaged) I have only a week left to get a retest so not enough time to get them through the web. Have I done what they wanted or are the lightly fail it anyway?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭Slidey

If they put down the bushes as the reason for failure it is unlikely to be failed for another reason on the retest.

The standard reasons on the report sheet are vague enough, I always give exact reasons in my own words for fails when testing. It leaves no wriggle room with people as you would be surprised what some people try to get out of doing.

Thanks Slidey, its worded exactly as I have stated above with the words bracket and missing been crossed off. I'll bring it as it is so because I need to get it taxed and I can replace the shocks when i get them.

The bushings may appear ok but when the weight of the car is applied it can be and probably is a different story.
