    No

It is only 'price fixing' or 'cartell' if it is expensive.
If it is cheap, it is 'healthy compition'.

Not necessarily, a cartel is price fixing amongst a group of businesses whether it be expensive or cheap.

Up to 6 petrol stations in Athy with the same price......mmmmm seems fishy

Let me get this right, the 6 petrol stations in athy have the cheapest fuel in the country by quite a long way, and you're accusing them of price fixing??

    Lol

When a significant quantity of them are all the same price then by definition they are engaging in price fixing behaviour.

I believe one of them is cheaper than 5 others (or something). Therefore there is pricing fixing behaviour being shown by these 5, and they are being forced down by the single one that is cheaper than them.

not that i'm complaining, cheap fuel i'm all for it.......but i'm sure they all have a little arrangment to keep the prices the same......so in that sense..yes it is price fixing

Well they're doing it wrong then. If they agreed to fix prices, don't you think they would have chosen a price which they can make decent money off, rather one where their margin is reduced to the bone?

They arent doing it wrong at all, its by the books.
This would be exactly how the Cartel of 5 would force the 1 guy out of business. Then they go back to higher prices.

From the outside you cannot tell if this is really happening or who the "1 guy" is.

    yes it is price fixing

Similar prices in different businesses could be price fixing, but similar prices which are the lowest in the country are more likely to be the ideal-world result of open competition.

Maybe look at it a different way: if one garage reduces their price further, they will lose money on what they sell. If they increase their price they will be at a competitive disadvantage in that market. Honestly there is any number of examples of price competition amongst fuel retailers in this country, and you picked quite possibly the worst example out there!

    LOL

This is a new one, so the big nasty wasty evilllll petrol station owners are meeting late at night in the woods wearing their satanic robes and fixing the price of petrol so that its sooooo cheap the public will just have to buy there.

Or else, just throwing a random idea out there....

King Oil may be selling below cost to attract new customers and the rest have to match them otherwise they are at risk of going bust. They may even be doing this in their other locations around the country

It will last a few months and then things will calm down.

My moneys on the satanic rituals though.

    FFS.

When I got my bike 11 months ago I could never fit more than €17.50 in it.

Now I'm hitting €23 per tank, I don't care what way you look at it, that's a ridiculuous increase for less than a year.

king oil prices went up today all ready.
i dont think its lead by king oil
i think its out the other side the tougher and topaz that lead the way with the cuts.
king oil have gained alot of new customers due to the new n78 opening so people arent bothered going to the texaco beside the Clanard Court Hotel.

it could also be due to the opening of the new petrol station on the stradbaly/portlaoise road.

With respect it is King Oil leading it, they are doing the exact same in 2 other locations, its common knoweldge in the trade and its been seen by them before. The others may be taking them on etc but the main cuts are being made by King (mainly because they are both distributor and forecourt operator)

No, the 5 are against the 1. The 1 is not co-operating. If the 5 raised their prices to say 1.34 then the 1 would get all the business.
